Cryptik Soul was born and raised in North London, UK. Brought up in
the average Chinese middle-class family he took a fascination to horror
movies and was trained in Tae-Kwon-Do at an early age under the late
Sifu Kim-Yun Chang. He then later went on to further his knowledge in
the arts by taking up Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA),
Nunchakus & Parkour (Free Running).
His first recollection of Hip Hop was through “YO! MTV Raps†where he
was exposed to Artists such as Wu-Tang Clan, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony,
Busta Rhymes, Kool G Rap, 2Pac, Notorious B.I.G., LL Cool J and Big
Pun. From then Hip Hop has always played a major part in his life. He
admired the poetic form and story telling behind each song and thus
using his love for horror films as inspiration for his lyrics.
At the tender age of 14 Cryptik rebelled due to the people who he
chose to associate himself with, here is where he was introduced to
various drug substances and gang banging leading to 9 years of
probably the worst and lowest times of his teenage years. From being
kicked out of school and ending up in juvenile for a year and a half to
constantly becoming homeless. Whilst living on the streets Cryptik was
forced to learn the harsh realities of life. Struggling to put a decent
meal in his stomach he resorted to hustling various drugs and
entangling himself in the notorious 14K Triads. He became an asset to
them when they learnt of his Martial Arts background and soon enough
his name became respected though Chinatown and the drug game, so
much so that he was even asked to become a body double and Martial
Arts choreographer for a low budget film called “Triads, Yardies & Onion
Bhajees†screened in 2003. But during that time he was still in touch
with his passion for Hip Hop escaping from his reality and releasing pent
up anger using his experiences in life as the base for a lot of his rhymes
and looking up to Big Pun and Cassidy to perfect his rhyme flow and
word play. Studying hours upon end the ins and outs of Hip Hop, the
beats, overflowed and exhausted out 3 books with his rhymes. He was
constantly challenging other MCs at competitions or randomly on the
streets and has rarely lost a battle. His efforts weren’t to go unnoticed
though when he put his skills to the test by entering “Jump Off†where
he became “Jump Off battle MC champion in 2005†after winning 4
rounds but he was unable to finish the final three weeks due to illness.
After his recognition on “Jump Off†he appeared on two underground
Hip Hop DVDs, a British one called “I Got Lyrics†and an American one
called “Married 2 Da Streetz Part 2†featuring Jin, Juelz Santana and
Cam’ron to name a few. Through the years he has been meeting and
spitting to numerous famous Artists such as Eminem, D12, Saigon, Kidz
In The Hall, Jin, Fabolous, DJ Qualls, Guru from Gang Starr, Mos Def
and Talib Kweli. In 2006 he co-stared and choreographed fight scenes
for the film “Ca$h & Curry†which was screened in September
2008 at the Portobello Film Festival. He is now currently in talks with Sureloc
on certain projects.
“I’m one of the lucky ones, it took a trip to Hong Kong for me to realise
that I was throwing my life away and to realise the mistakes I’ve
made. Living the gangster life isn’t as glamorous as how it’s made out
to be, I had to learn that the hard way but I survived…â€
