Steve Lampert

About Me

Steve Lampert studied trumpet and piano from an early age and later attended the Mannes College of Music. Decades of performing in a variety of musical contexts left little trace on his own music: few of the contexts were even remotely close to the musical worlds he wished to explore. His first recording as a leader, "Venus Perplexed", was released by SteepleChase Records in 2004. His new recording "Music From There" was released in 2007 by Bridge Records. ............................................................ .............................................."Bright new voice with interesting ideas" Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings ............................................................ ..............................................“Trumpeter Steve Lampert is someone who has also absorbed the ideas of the past and come out very 21st Century......... This is in the same league as the cutting edge music Dave Douglas and Matthew Shipp are doing today, an experimental collision of sounds that engages the head, heart and groin all at once. This one may slip past the radar, but it definitely deserves a wide hearing.” Jerome Wilson, Cadence, October 2004 ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------“Lampert’s “Venus Perplexed, an 11-piece suite is the most beguiling music I’ve heard in a long time. That’s partly because it presents a composer equally at home in the sound worlds of Arnold Schoenberg, Conlon Nancarrow, electric-period Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix .....” Mark Stryker, Detroit Free Press October 31, 2004........................................................ ................................................."... a fluid and compelling soloist ..."
