About Me

After playing Austin coffee shops for years, Austin native Gina Chavez approached Momo’s to host the CD release for her debut album, Hanging Spoons. Weeks passed before she received a call about filling in for Austin songstress Suzanna Choffel on a Tuesday night. With one week’s notice, Gina drew more than 60 people for the weekday gig, a showing that prompted Momo’s to host one of the larges CD release parties they’d seen and offer her a weekly residency.
Months later, songs from Hanging Spoons landed Gina’s name in front of the editors of Billboard Magazine. As one of the top six finalists – chosen from 1,300 entries – Gina performed at Disc Makers’ 2007 Independent Music World Series showcase. Her music is now part of the Heavy Hitters CD Rom compilation being distributed nationwide.
With stylistic comparisons ranging from Joni Mitchell to Alicia Keys, Gina’s delivery is versatile and captivating. Accompaniment from the multi-instrument talent Roel Martinez (guitar, mandolin, bass) and several other Austin musicians brings movement and energy to a live show that is capturing the ear of the Live Music Capital.

Influences: a bit ecclectic. i grew up on a random smattering of cassettes, including Lyle Lovett, Little Richard, Michael Jackson, and The Judds. Since then, I've added at least a few more faves to the list: Nickel Creek, Patti Griffin, Ani Difranco, Jason Mraz, Imogen Heap, Meg Hutchinson, Kasey Chambers, and Austin musicians Roel Martinez, The Hudsons, John Pointer, Gary Graves, Toni Price, Danny Schmidt, Paul Finley, and Pieces of East. Austin makes me smile.
Sounds Like: Joss soul with Sarah McLaughlin sweetness and clarity; Ani attitude and Baez depth; a musical paradox that keep you coming back for more...
