About Me

I am an improvising musician. Making things up and creating new music that Jesus gives me is my life's work and gift. I love all styles but my heart is deeply rooted in jazz in its' many varieties. I am also passionate about the improvised music of India. I have played with too many people to name them all, but some of my favorites have been: The Earl Harvin Trio (Dave Palmer, Earl Harvin and me), Brahmah (Ed Smith, Poovalur Sriji, Jamal Mohamed, and me), Ed Soph and all of the UNT Faculty, Marc Seales, Woody Witt, Tim Hagans, J.T. Bates, Lyles West, Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano, Don Alias, Dave Liebman, Spike Robinson, Kenny Wheeler, Art Lande, Cedar Walton, Joe LoCascio to name a few. There have been years of gigs with many other great players in places I have lived: Denton (Dallas), Denver, Montreal, Nova Scotia (Antigonish and Halifax) and Bowling Green (Toledo, OH).I am a professor of jazz studies at the University of North Texas and have been there since 1989. In what seems like other lifetimes I have taught at Concordia University in Montreal, St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia and Bowling Green State University in Ohio. In the summers I am on the faculty of the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Workshops at the University of Louisville. I have recorded a lot of albums on both guitar and bass and have books and music published by Mel Bay and Alfred. I endorse D'Addario strings and Ed Schaefer guitars. My Interests

Music:

Band Website: www.fredhamilton.com
Band Members: As most jazz musicians do, I play with a lot of friends. It will always depend on where I am playing and who is available. My favorites for a trio gig in Texas are either Lyles West or Lynn Seaton on bass and Ed Soph or Dennis Durrick on drums. I also love to play with Dave Palmer and Earl Harvin, and the ensemble Brahmah.
Influences: Spiritually my Lord Jesus influences every aspect of my life. Musically, rather than list everyone that all jazz musicians would cite, a few are John Coltrane, Ravi Shankar, Jim Hall, John McLaughlin, Bill Evans, Dave Holland and Gary Peacock.
Sounds Like: My friends, you have to fill this in. To me, I sound like myself.
Record Label: I have albums on Summit Records, Origen and Apria.

The Blessings of 2008

So, 2008 begins. Pray for peace and God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. I returned from a three week trip to Seoul, Korea, Calcutta and Bombay, India just before Christmas. Wow! It was ...
