Welcome, and thanks for stopping by!
right|:|left WRITE is a unique songwriting series taking place in Toronto's west end. Open to musicians of varying levels of experience, the mandate of the project is to serve as an incubator for creative development and exchange between both new and not-so-new songwriters. Participants range from experienced, performing artists searching for new inspiration to promising new songwriters seeking to refine their skills.
Each four-week cycle consists of weekly 3-hour workshops held on Sunday afternoons in a large, bright and airy painter's studio. The first half of each weekly workshop (weeks 1, 2 and 3) features a special guest performance/lecture by a different, highly regarded performing songwriter. These wonderful folks are carefully chosen with the idea that their exceptional talent and the heartfelt sharing of their work with us will provide inspiration and encouragement to all in attendance. For the week 4 workshop, "STUDENTS RULE!" More on that later!
The second half of each workshop is dedicated to exploring and practicing lyric-based songwriting, with the focus on finding and honouring our innate and very real creative voice and process. This segment of the class will be facilitated by performing songwriter and series founder Rosemary Phelan (please see bio elsewhere on this page.)
Workshop groups are kept small to foster a relaxed, intimate atmosphere. The total cost to participants for the four-week series (including all materials and refreshments) is $250. It's our hope that this very reasonable fee will make the series available to many people. The art studio venue is accessible (please call ahead if the private elevator is needed) and easy to get to by TTC. There is also ample street parking. The Junction is liberally sprinkled with excellent eateries for a pre- or post-class bite, and High Park is within walking distance. (Please click on the "Upcoming Shows" entry above for directions to the studio.)
Please drop by this page from time to time for updates and other helpful info (yes, there will be coffee. And tea. Lots of it!) You can check out a few of our scheduled guest artists in the "friends" section below, and read their bios in the blog section above.
Ready to sign up? Interested in the course but not sure it's for you? Feel free to leave an email message here if you have questions. If you're not a MySpacer, we can also be reached at: [email protected]
Glad you came by... hope to hear from you soon!
All the best ~ rosemary
PS ~ If you're interested, please check out the "Music for the Ill and Dying" blog entry above; a general outline for the new 1-day workshop on that topic is posted there. Thanks!

"Nobody can or will ever be taught how to write anything. That said, there will always be a few first rate teachers with experience and love and inspiration and generosity and nerve enough to lead the rest of us curious minds stumbling inward to that faithful and indefinable place from which all writing begins – Rosemary Phelan is one of those few." ~JON BROOKS

"Rosemary Phelan's right|:|left WRITE songwriting series breathes. It's as beautiful and moving as her songs. She offers her excellent ideas about creativity with kindness and generosity. She challenges the participants, in a subtle and caring way, to dig deep to find that place inside them that is unique and inspired. There's always a feeling of joy when a person experiences genuine creativity - when they find and use their own voice. The elation at the workshop was clear and present and palpable. Like the participants, I was smitten with Rosemary and did not want the right|:|left WRITE songwriting series to end." ~ KATHERINE WHEATLEY

"I was recently honoured to be part of Rosemary Phelan's right|:|left WRITE songwriting series. What a treat! The participants were engaged, they asked interesting and thought-provoking questions, and were clearly dedicated to becoming better songwriters. I highly recommend the right|:|left WRITE songwriting series for any writer who wants to improve their craft in a supportive, creative environment." ~ EVE GOLDBERG
