Sedayne

About Me

Since being given a hand-crafted Yugoslavian wooden whistle flute * by his grandparents as an inquisitive 7-year-old in 1968, Sedayne has devoted himself to the exploration of ethnic & folk instruments, recording and performing since 1977 in areas of Mediaeval, Traditional & Experimental music, somehow managing to combine all three in his own compositional work which has lately been featured on BBC Radio Three's MIXING IT and Resonance FM's ONE HOURS AS. He has appeared on numerous CDs, including Martin Archer & Geraldine Monk's ANGEL HIGH WIRES which also features Julie Tippetts, nee Driscoll, and his wife Rachel McCarron with whom he contributed the Venereum Arvum track THE HEAVENLY GATES to the critically acclaimed Infernal Proteus 'Musical Herbal' - a 4 CD hardback book issued by Ajna (USA).
(Sedayne performs a traditional English May Carol midst the bonny bluebells of Houghall Woods, Durham, UK on Tuesday the 1st of May 2007)

Sedayne was a founder member of METGUMBNERBONE whose 1983 album LIGELIAHORN currently fetches over £100 a copy on the second hand market; in 1988 he recorded the 'experimental folk' album MASSTISHADDHU : SHEKINAH with a trio featuring Richard Rupenus - originally issued on United Dairies, Shekinah was reissued on CD by Psychedelic Pig (USA) in 2000 & promptly sold out.

He has also appeared on two CDs & in numerous performances playing percussion & crwth with the medieval duo Misericordia. Among his more recent collaborations is a CD with Italian film-maker & musician Francesco Paladino on MVSICA FIVTO, released in February 2006 on Hic Sunt Leons (Italy) and with the Nihil Project on their PLOUGH PLAYS album. In May 2007 he had a composition featured on the Sonic Arts Network CD compilation OTHERNESS along with such composers as Brian Eno and Karlheinz Stockhausen (RIP). Also in 2007 Sedayne & Rachel McCarron contributed the Venereum Arvum track Child 102 - Willie & Earl Richard's Daughter (aka The Birth of Robin Hood)to John Barleycorn Reborn which also features his work as both Sedayne and Sundog in the download section.

In his storytelling performances Sedayne combines his highly evolved and dynamic use of traditional narrative with virtuoso performances on a diversity of traditional & ancient musical instruments, including the Crwth (an ancient type of Celtic bowed lyre), Hummel (a traditional zither from the forests of Scandinavia), Citera Alpha & Citera Beta (more developed forms of board-zither from Hungary), Pipe & Tabor (the traditional one-man band of 3-hole flute & drum) and Kemence (aka the Black Sea Fidde). Sedayne is also a seasoned performer of traditional folk-song & balladry, featuring these in his performances wherein unbroken sequences are woven between story, song & ballad. He is often to be found enjoying singarounds in the North East & North West of England, in particular at The Fleetwood Folk Club which meets at 8.30pm on Thursdays at The Steamer Hotel in Fleetwood, Lancashire; Joe Crane's Come-All-Ye that meets on the first Saturday of the month in The Cumberland Arms, Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne; and Les's first Wednesday sing at The Beech in Chorlton-cum-Hardy **.

Sedayne has opened up two other Myspace sites featuring other aspects of his work as:The Ha-Ha and Sundog . He also makes, edits & otherwise facilitates short films for You Tube & elsewhere under the name of Sabrina Eden , and as one half of the duo Venereum Arvum .

** Although more than happy to take his place as an anonymous voice in many the singaround these last thirty years or so, Sedayne has never thought of himself as a Folk Singer per se, nor yet even as a musician; if pushed, he'll admit to being a philosophical storyteller seduced by the beauty of traditional narrative balladry, seasonal & ceremonial folk song, organological diversity and consequent sound-magic.
