About Me

A “SnapshotPoeticAutobiography” of Markesha “Woodstar” Woods The year was 1976 when I thrust myself onto the scene…… I was only a young girl when I first started writing. It started with my daddy insisting that I enter black history essay contests. I resisted. I was just a tomboy who only wanted to play sports. However, daddy insisted that I had a way with words that far exceeded the capacity of many of my peers at that time. I was bound by the parentally invoked “no writing, no sports” clause. So, I started entering every essay, speech, research paper contest that came my way. This went on for years. The more that I wrote, the more awards that I won. The more recognition that I received, the more interested I became. I thirsted for vocabulary. I lusted new pronunciations for words. And then along came poetry. My whole life changed. It was Langston Hughes that first enticed me towards poetry. He helped me to realize that poetry did not have to be written in concise stanzas. He helped me to see that all the adversity and tribulations that I was facing growing up as a chubby, poor, crooked tooth smiled girl were able to be circumvented through the words that I wrote. Instantly I felt that it would be my words that would give me power. So, my intimacy with poetry began. That was many years ago. Today not much has changed. Still very much like that bewildered young girl of old. Just a little older, a few more experiences, and probably a tad bit bolder. Yet the core remains. Determined. Steadfast. Seeking conscientiousness. On this path I have met a lot of people and touched many lives. I released my debut, underground CD in 2003, Messenger. In 2006, I released Just Chattin’ my first chat book. Over the last few years I have performed everywhere from coffee house, to bookstore, to government office. I have shared the stage with such people as Nikki Giovanni, Malcolm Jamal Warner, and The Last Poets. I am continually seeking venues and audiences to deliver my words to. I am currently working on a Book/DVD project for release in 2008. I know that conquering life’s experiences blended with God given abilities to articulate them is indeed in my design. I WELCOME THAT TASK. I did not choose poetry. We mutually agreed to dance harmoniously. When our worlds collided I know that there was an instant connection that only grows stronger with time. Put simply, I Love Poetry.

Influences: My Grandmother is one of my greatest influences. Strong, wise, mutil-talented, beautiful, graceful in all her ways. My daddy is always going to be THE KING. My older brother Keith for his continuous support and input. Jill Scott is my sister! I appreciate her in all forms. If I gave you diamonds out of my own womb, POWERFUL.... Prince is a phenomenal writer and I would love to apprentice under him in my songwriting. Langston Hughes kicked off this poetry thing for me. Raven, my for real sister. A powerful sister in Memphis who helped pave the way for poetry down here. On that same frame, Michelle Montgomery who continues to present with poise and speak with conviction. There are many more who will be added. However, I will leave you all with these for now to marinate on
Sounds Like: I am pleased to state that I sound like no one else. Although I admire so many others I relish in that fact. I realize that being that my only instrument is my voice and that God only made one like it. See Masterpiece above for more......
