About Me

Distrust is a 15 minute short film about inner strength, loyalty, and trust. The film was shot, edited, and produced by Production HQ in Los Angeles. It is a story that centers around one man and his relationships, and how fear and paranoia can not only threaten everything he has, but lead to an unexpected breaking point. In today’s world where there is so much violence and aggression, I wanted to explore the layers and possible sources of this anger: where it comes from and how it is expressed. In addition to Jay Lee’s innovative cinematography and the powerful cast, Anthony Forrest’s original score captures the script’s mood and ambiance perfectly.
Synopsis
Jack is a young successful suburban drug dealer who seems to have it all: a lucrative business, a beautiful wife, and Marty, his loyal life-long friend. When an old friend betrays Jack in a drug deal, Jack explodes in a violent rage. Even though Jack’s business is lucrative, the world of drug dealing is still relatively new to Jack, creating a sense of unease and discomfort in his life. With his façade of control cracked, Jack’s mounting distrust of his newly wed wife drives him to concoct a plan to test her loyalty. His paranoia approaching madness, Jack sets his twisted plan into action, threatening to destroy not only everything he loves, but himself as well.
Inspiration
The story originated from a suggestion to write about a dangerous character, so we created a young drug dealer who is on the verge of loosing control. Then two other characters emerged: Marty, his “right hand man,” and his newly wed trophy wife, Valerie. I always wanted to explore the concept of testing a loved one, and after imagining the dark tone and mood of the piece, this idea felt like an appropriate addition to make. In the end, it felt provocative, relevant, and important to examine the intricacies and consequences of uncontrollable distrust.
