About Me

Over the past few years I have been researching and collating the memoirs of my Great Uncle Bobby, who passed away following a stroke in 1993. He was a Squadron Leader in the Royal Air Force, joining Bomber Command in 1940 at the height of the Battle of Britain, and he retired in 1969 after an interesting posting to the Ministry of Defense, where he travelled extensively across the world. He was my favourite relative when I was a boy, a dashing hero figure who would tell the most amazing stories of his wartime exploits, all of which turned out to be true when the relevant records were declassified under the 50-year rule. He had a great fund of knowledge and was a talented artist making detailed sketches and paintings of service life. A meticulous diarist, much of the detail of his life springs full-armoured from his writings, and forms the backbone of this biography, especially given the secret nature of much of his service career. His picture still rest on his sister's mantlepiece, that of a smiling young man in his leathers on an old BSA taken after enlistment. A popular man, he was handsome and gallously humourous, a loyal and dedicated friend to the many people who miss him. He was 83.
