The New York Times Magazine labeled Janet Onyenucheya a “trend-setter”!
Meet the newest addition to the R&B/Pop genres’ more diversified collective of artists: JANET ONYENUCHEYA. Janet is a 21-year-old singer/songwriter/entertainer in the process of becoming a recording artist.
Born to Nigerian parents and raised in the Bronx, from a young age, Janet enjoyed all types of music and possessed a unique perspective of song. During her childhood, she was exposed to a variety of music ranging from Pop to South African Jazz. “I have always loved the rhythm in African music. As a child, I learned that most African recording artists used their music as a form of communication/storytelling, and that inspired me to aspire to become a great storyteller through my songwriting.”
It was not until Janet was attending Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music, Art and the Performing Arts that she truly discovered her passion. At the ‘Fame’ school, Janet didn’t feel productive unless she was singing, listening to, or writing music!”
During her senior year of high school Janet began performing in various talent showcases and at notable venues such as CBGB’S, The Cutting Room, and the Berklee Performance Center.
After graduating from Laguardia HS, Janet took time off to intern at an up-and-coming music publishing company in New York City for 6 months and eventually decided to continue studying music at the world famous Berklee College of Music. Working so closely with different types of music helped enable her ears to recognize a “hit song” in any genre. She also enrolled in classes at the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame and began collaborating on various projects with New York songwriters, most notably Jeff Franzel (N’Sync, Clay Aiken, Raven Symone). Janet was fast becoming as well rounded an artist as possible by working with other musicians as well as strengthening her skills as a songwriter.
Janet’s music has been described as R&B with a Funk flare. “I love to sit down and write songs because I know that no one can better express my feelings. My goal is to create music that any listeners can enjoy listening to over and over again”. Janet enjoys experimenting with music to find her own unique sound and her versatility will guarantee that she has a lasting career in music. Like most artists, Janet is always evolving and her talent will continue to amplify the more she learns. With her work, she hopes to join the ranks of the chosen few - entertainers that have shaped a music altogether fresh- while managing to reflect all that came before.
