Hellequin originally started as a project whose goal was to produce an entire album of music created entirely by distorted random sounds. While some short fragments were created, the project never really went anywhere. However, after listening to Ulver's album "Perdition City" and Star of Ash's "Iter.Viator.", I began to experiment with various VST software synthesizers. The project then became focused on blending the atmosphere and depth of ethereal darkwave (such as Black Tape for a Blue Girl and Love Spirals Downwards) with the distortion and darker menace of doom/death/black metal bands (Draconian, Anathema, and Opeth were great influences). Later, post-rock (Godspeed You! Black Emperor being the largest influence) and drone influences were incorporated. The aforementioned "found" sounds still make an appearance in the percussion, created entirely with a crescent wrench, a soda can, a milk jug, and a fork and spoon.
