The Folk-Ups

About Me

The Folk-Ups are the realization of a life long dream. No one is quite sure who's dream, but a dream just the same. Actually the Folk-Ups are the brain child of Bill "Sputnik" Spooner. Bill was the catalyst that ignited the San Francisco theater rock troupe the Tubes into becoming the stuff that legends are made of. His twisted satirical sense of humor combined with musical prowess propelled the transplated Arizonans into something the world had never seen. But that was then and this is now...Spooner and co-Folk-up, Alex Guinness, met some years ago when they were both struggling local bandguys in San Francisco....at that time, Alex's band, Elvis Duck, was a successful, popular club band and Spooner's group, The Beans, was getting nowhere. The Beans became The Tubes, invested heavily in "prop rock" and became icons of the 80's.
Spooner never forgot Alex, and vowed someday, when the conditions were just right, they would be reunited......so rejoice! the conditions are just right...very "just right"!! Bill and Alex's blend of righteous folkrock, hep-cat humor, and frenzied finger-picking has thrilled and delighted delirious denizens of dedicated fans! In just six months, they have risen from Monday nite freebees at Barfly Central, to supporting acts such as Freedy Johnston, Liar, and the legendary "Dave Davies Kinks Kronicles".The fabulous Folk-Ups have appeared at a variety of venues: Slim's, Hamburger Mary's, Noe Valley Ministry and the Sweetwater just to mention a few.
Bill and Alex (and the songs they have written) are the chunky,mystery- meat filling of this musical shepard's pie...you're not quite sure what's in it, but
Mmmmm dammit, it's good!
