What is HIV?
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus, HIV, is a virus that infects the white blood cells (cells that help a person's immune system) of humans and replicates (makes new copies of itself) within those cells. The virus damages healthy white blood cells, which makes a person more susceptible to other illnesses and diseases. People become infected with HIV in a few different ways: Accidental needle sticks (i.e. nurses or doctors), sharing dirty needles for drug use, or unprotected sex (i.e. vaginal or anal). One out of every four people living with HIV are not even aware of their HIV status! This is why HIV is spread so easily. Do you know your status? If not, come check us out. HIV testing at NMAS is easy and painless.
