Teenager murdered early Saturday morning 17-year-old struck by single gunshot By Michael Burke The Journal Times Saturday, November 3, 2007 2:58 PM CDT RACINE — A 17-year-old boy was shot to death early Saturday morning here on the city’s south side; police are calling it a homicide. Racine police reported that Torivio J. Melendez of Racine was killed by a single gunshot to the abdomen as he stood on his front porch at 2514 17th St. Police were called at 1:53 a.m. and encountered several people at the scene upon their arrival, none of whom were able to provide suspect information. However, they learned that several shots were fired and struck the house. Melendez was reportedly the only person hit by gunfire. He was was transported by rescue to St. Mary’s Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries and died at 5:30 a.m. As of late morning, police had made no arrests. As police wrapped up their work at the scene about 10:30 a.m., Felix Tirado of Kenosha, expressed his anger. Tirdado, 63, said he is the grandfather of someone who was also present when Melendez was shot. "This is ... gangbanger (stuff), that’s what this is," he said. Tirado said he works just down 17th Street from where the murder happened. "In my day we would fight with our fists," he said.
