About Me

Breakwater, a pretty good band you've never heard of and probably never will…
Maybe not ”the best band you've never heard of”, but I like to think that we had a few good moments. I remember that we used to called our style ”arena rock for small rooms”. I guess we were pretentious enough to add ”… when it’s raining outside” too. Through the years we wrote about 40 to 50 songs. Most of them were recorded in one way or another, and some have found their way to MP3 format at last. Recently I found out that a lot of them were collected, mainly by Niclas (keyboards/guitars), on our studio computer. I felt a strange urge to make a myspace page to at least get a feeling that they’re not completely forgotten. Most of the songs I will put up here were never released in any form, and this is my little revenge on the circumstances that made it that way. Some tracks are just myself or the band goofing around trying out stuff, others were meant for a proper album release. See if you can tell the difference.
The band was started somewhere around –92 or –93. In –95 we ”released” one fancy demo on tape, called the Five song cassette/booklet promotion release which may, or may not exist in this day. I still have one of the covers framed on my wall. Our critical career peaked by then, when we got four stars out of five in the demo reviews in the famous swedish pop magazine Sound Affects. Next year the green mini-CD called Hints for those who know, which was financed by ourselves, found it’s way to most of our friends and a few other people. Sound Affects rated it two stars… There are still some copies left in a cupboard somewhere, I think. This CD granted us some gigs, and maybe a very local radio-interview if I’m not all wrong. In –98 we signed a ”record” deal that provided us with a lot of studio time, but unfortunately no ”record releases” whatsoever as we understood later on. Looking back at this I don’t even feel very bitter anymore, just a little sad, cause I’m still kinda proud of some of the recordings we did.
Most of the songs you will find on this page was recorded for what would be our first ”real” album. We worked on these songs and recorded them in –98 through 2000, and had some really great experiences in the studio. To be at least a little fair, all of the ”production company’s” equipment was stolen sometime in the late nineties, so things wasn’t very easy for anyone. The last song recorded with the said ”production company” was Starlings, and that was probably in 2001. Not until around 2003 we had finally got rid of the contracts we signed (and the hope that things would someday change and we would be the rockstars we were meant to be). But then we all had moved on to other things and it was kinda clear that Breakwater didn’t really exist anymore, both due to creative and legal causes.
About two thirds of the songs were written by myself, and the last third (and in my opinion probably some of the best songs we ever did) were written by Niclas. All of the band added things in different, important ways. I like to think that we were at our best when we persuaded Erik (drums) to play with us in –98 and onwards. But I also had some great times back in the days when it was just me, Rickard (bass, backing vocals) and Tina (vocals and backing vocals) huddled over a Fostex portastudio, or when we played a strange gig at some kind of mini summer beach festival for a bunch of bathing kids, some people working on their tans and a few dogs.
Now. Go ahead and listen to the songs. Maybe add us as a friend. Write a comment. Come back sometime if you like what you hear – I’ll try change songs now and then. After all there’s a lot of them, and some of them aren’t to bad compared to other stuff here on Myspace. And no, we probably don’t want a ”record deal” or anything (if it doesn’t mean free beer for the rest of our lives and/or a Wembley gig, that is). See ya!
