..OJO DE LA TIERRA: Hayunga here maps the abstract, imaginal world of human consciousness onto "realistic"' landscapes. Working this way, Hayunga has created complex new worlds, whose relationship to the physical world is simultaneously clear and impenetrable. In the new paintings, Hayunga has created landscapes where opulent clouds-alive with intimations of what the romantics called the sublime-drift over golden, soot-ashed plains and landforms that seem to have merged with circuit boards or maps. Hovering in foreground like some late twentieth century version of Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Transparent Eyeballs" are the sparely-drawn heads of some strange new species of simian-human, who seem simultaneously primitive and because of their transparency-omniscient. Are they newly evolved creatures? Or have they been reawakened with trace memories of the past? The painting's powers arise from the opposing tensions balanced in both the painting itself- ravishing figurative painting balanced by carefully-wrought abstraction: A sheet of hardened oil over burnished, etched surfaces; conscious, technically astute painting contrasted with haste improvisation and the seemingly irreconcilable ideas suggested- the pre-industrial and the post-technological sublime; human consciousness and the physical world; sexuality and sterility; imagination and imaginations limits. These tensions are resolved or left unresolved differently in each work of the series. In the presence of this work the viewer is apt to be disturbed, provoked, made peaceful and moved, all by the same painting.*************************************************** *************************************RED PEYOTE SERIES: Obsessively drawing and painting this exotic, visceral experience of Animism. A hybridization of form and medium - where animal heads are matched to human bodies and gestures. Creating an uneasy pairing - a pairing that asks questions or elicits responses often lost to duality. Is this painting a riddle? Is it something to do with Virility or Fragility...Eroticism or perversion...primitivism, Evolution or Mutation? When you look closely at the work, see the random multiples of chance. The phenomena within the materials themselves - the phenomena resulting from the gesture of the brush, or the staccato signals made in vine charcoals. The work is as naive and automatic as it is ingenious and rife with complexity. Therefore, the materials must also posses an alchemy of dual purpose, ie: Blood red water colors and oils creating fluid bodies in motion. Plant, animal and human fibers - fused in bee's wax and oil laquers - recreating fur, eyes and teeth. The series is an expression of raw nature, a contemplation of life, mortality and resonant picture making. ************************************************************ ****************************ONE PERSON EXHIBITIONS: August 15, 2008-September 2008, Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico-- 2006 Red Peyote Works, Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico-- The Red Peyote Papers, De Praktijk, Amsterdam, NL-- 1993 Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico ************************************************************ ****************************SELECTED GROUP EXHIBITIONS: 2008 Beyond Representation, New York, New York, exhibited by Jenkins Johnson Gallery-- 2008 Beyond Representation, San Francisco, California, exhibited by Jenkins Johnson Gallery-- 2008 Art Chicago, Chicago, Illinios, exhibited by Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico-- 2007 Flow Miami Invitational Art Fair, Miami, Florida, exhibited by Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico-- 2007 Art Chicago, Chicago, Illinios, exhibited by Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico-- 2006 Flow Miami Invitational Art Fair, Miami, Florida, exhibited by Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico-- 2006 Art Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, exhibited by Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico-- 2006 Art Scottsdale, Scottsdale, Arizona, exhibited by Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico-- 2005 Art Santa Fe, Santa Fe, New Mexico, exhibited by Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico-- 2005 Chicago Art in the Park, Chicago, Illinois, exhibited by Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico-- 2005 Emerging Artists Exhibition, Scottsdale, Arizona, exhibited by Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico-- 2002 Peyton Wright Gallery, Santa Fe, NM-- 1997 The Livingroom, Lower Haight, San Francisco, CA-- 1997 Art Santa Fe, Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Galisteo, New Mexico-- 1997 Gail Severn Gallery, Sun Valley, Idaho-- 1996 Linda Durham Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico-- 1994 Chicago International Art Exposition, Chicago, Illinois-- 1992 Seattle International Art Exposition, Seattle, Washington-- 1990 Woods Gerry International Show, Woods Gerry Gallery, Providence, Rhode Island-- ************************************************************ ****************************AWARDS/COMMISSIONS Rhode Island School of Design Merit Scholarship-- Chicago Institute for the Arts Merit Scholarship-- Congressional Art Award, Washington, DC ************************************************************ ****************************RECENT MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS Tucson Museum of Art - An Eclectic Eye September 15, 2007-January 6, 2008 21C Museum - Hybridity: The Evolution of Species and Spaces in 21st-Century Art April-September 2006 516 Arts - Green December 9, 2006-January 27, 2007 ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------
