Being a child of a musical family, John was destined to become a musician. His dad played the accordion and hoped that he would follow in his footsteps. But John's passion was always the drums. Early musical influences included anybody who was anybody in that era - The Beatles, Cream, Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Stones, and on, and on...
In 1968, at age 13, he started playing in his first band. Through the following decades he played with many local groups, playing various styles of music throughout Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and the D.C. area.
In 1994 John retired from playing due to a degenerated right hip which was injured in a car accident in '84. He underwent hip surgery in January of '95 and began the long recovery...
Other than sitting in with a band here and there, the next decade went by without a steady band. Then in '05 John, his wife Carol, and son Christian were led to Salem U.M.C. in Orwigsburg. Salem is a church rich in music and the opportunity came to play in the Church's Praise Band. There he met Sterling Koch (guitar) and his daughter Kate (bass). In the summer of '07 Sterling decided to put a new band together and the rockin' three piece blues band "61 South" was born.
They have performed in the Harrisburg, Philadelphia, New York and New Jersey areas as well as points between. Their self-titled debut album was released in '08, and they are getting ready to head back into the studio this summer. For more info on 61 South, visit the band's web site at www.myspace.com/61southblues .
John also gives private drum lessons out of his home studio in Cressona.
