About Me


Founder of “Running Is My High” Lake Merritt 5K & 10K Run, Hank LeBEAU has always been committed to making a better life for himself, his family and especially for his fellow American Indian community. He has been clean and sober for 36 years. His commitment to the American Indian community in the Bay Area has been on going since 1965.
He started out playing basketball on several teams. He became one of the best of the best. He founded the San Jose Travelers and traveled all Indian basketball tournament circuit all over the West. Made MVP at several tournaments.
Under the auspices of the San Jose Indian Activities Association, started a boxing team, which traveled to various Northern California and Nevada Indian tournaments.
Currently Hank has continued to work with Native people in recovery. He was just appointed to sit on the National Board of Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church. He is the Associate Priest at St. Philip’ s Episcopal in San Jose, CA.
He is a lecturer on various topics: spirituality, philosophy, recovery modalities, theology and many areas regarding American Indian and the behavioral / social sciences.
Rev. Hank has accomplished many things in his short life. Traveled a varied road, been an example to many people, has inspired many to continue with their education and continues to inspire, challenge and considers himself a spiritual advocate.
Raised on Pine Ridge Reservation 6 weeks to 2 years of age by David and Lucy Iron Hawk Twiss (mother’s brother & wife) Raised in Wheatland, CA from age 2 to 8 ½ years by Luz and Evaristo Torres (father’s mother & step-father). Came to San Francisco Bay Area to live with parents in 1954.
Went to various schools in Mountain View, CA. Sherry has been involved with American Indian community activities since 1975. She has been a valued partner to her husband for 31 ½ years. He did not do all that he has done by himself.
She is and has been a partner in all of the activities Hank has been involved in by being a driver, babysitter, bank clerk, cook, nurse and every other job that was called for. The old cliché “ behind every great man there is a GREAT woman.” Sherry as the saying goes, ”been there done that.”
She at one time was Dennis Banks’ secretary while attending & working at DQU in Davis, CA. Involved in AIRLIFT, providing warm clothing, blankets and food supplies for Big Mountain in Arizona and Yellow Thunder Camp in Black Hills of South Dakota.
Worked as a production assistant on the movie “Dances With Wolves”.
Sherry and Hank have hosted the annual community dinners such as Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. They have also handed out donated gifts to many of the children during Christmas.
Hank and Sherry are not only Spiritual, Outstanding American Indian Leaders, but they are also mentors who help those who have lost their path on the Red Road.
