Dennis Smith (“Deep Denâ€) is an Oakland, California based musician specializing in recording and live performance on the fretless and fretted 4 and 5 string electric basses. He has been recording and performing professionally for 25 + years. Dennis is a life-long student of the Jazz idiom and considers himself fortunate to have performed with some of the world’s best musicians. Although a student of Jazz, Dennis has developed an independent style that fuses Jazz with Funk, Rhythm and Blues, Rock, Reggae, West African, Middle Eastern, and Western Classical styles. This fusion allows him to contribute to a wide variety of music and artists.Dennis has worked and toured with many world class artists, musicians and producers including Harvey Fuqua (Motown), Leon Sylvers, Sylvester, Jeannie Tracy, Melvin Seals & JGB (The Jerry Garcia Band), Melvin Seals’ Melting Pot, Jorge Santana, Richard Bean (Malo, Sapo), Bobby Espinosa and Freddie Sanchez (El Chicano), Steve Salas (Tierra), David Murray, Pharoah Sanders, Gail Muldrow, Cynthia Robinson (Sly & The Family Stone, Graham Central Station), William Kennedy, Cody Moffett, Forrest Buchtel, Kenneth Nash, Samba Ngo, Bruce Burger & RebbeSoul, Common Tongue, Charles Moffett, Sr., Ed Kelly, Art Lande, Ze’ Manel, Arsenio Kounde, Nepoleon Murphy-Brock and Ike Willis (Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention), Wil Bernard, Scott Law, Dave Ellis and many others.Dennis currently tours, performs and records with The Steve Carter Group, Samba Ngo and the Ngoma Players, The Latin Sensations and Rebbesoul.In addition to his work as a recording session musician and performing musician, Dennis has also produced several projects for other artists and has produced soundtracks and theme music for marketing films and advertisements.
