About Me

Bobby Shulgold received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California Institute of the Arts. He then continued his flute studies under the tutelage of Mr. Julius Baker, then principal flutist of the New York Philharmonic. Mr. Shulgold has been the Principal Flutist of the Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra from 1988 till the orchestra’s closing. He has also been the Principal Flutist of the Beverly Hills Symphony since 1979, where he has been a featured soloist on many occasions. More recently, he has served as the Principal Flutist and personnel manager for the Hollywood Symphony Orchestra. Bobby has also been active as a session player in Los Angeles where he recorded all 5 seasons of the “Alias” television series, frequently being featured on the Alto Flute. He has also played principal flute on the following motion picture releases: "Leprechaun" “Ruby” “Becoming Colette” "Race the sun" "The Craft," "Titan AE" "Daredevil" “Collateral Damage” “The Chronicles of Riddick” “The Siege” “The Negotiator” "Three to Tango" "High Crimes" and "Still Breathing". More recent films include:“Sky High” “The Family Stone.” “The Incredibles” and “Mission Impossible 3." Mr. Shulgold is also featured in the blockbuster Pixar production “Ratatouille,” within which he can be heard playing any solo Flute, Piccolo, Alto Flute, and Artistic Whistling passages. "Speed Racer" is a more recent Pixar production that Bobby worked on. Recent television work would include the J.J. Abrahms series "Fringe". Mr. Shulgold also played Flute 1 on the soon to be released "Star Trek" and also Pixar's "UP" still in production. Bobby has also been active as a player of chamber music and been a soloist in the “Sundays Live” series on KMZT radio. As a footnote, he has a great fondness for listening to and playing Jazz.

Influences: Julius Baker, James Galway, Hubert Laws, and the demands placed on me by whoever is the composer of the music I'm playing. Most of the time I'm trusted to play whatever it is in the way I think it should sound.
Sounds Like: My sound is the culmination of years of study and aspiring to high artistic ideals. I'm constantly endeavoring to make what I hear coming out of the flute sound like what's in my head. I think the composers I play for hire me because my approach to the flute is unique.
