Hello there, my name is Jefford and I am current resident of Hyde Park within the Windy City of Chicago, IL! Before Chicago, I lived part of my childhood within the Central American country of Belize, amidst the warm breeze, palm trees, white-sand shores, and the salt-water Caribbean Sea. Even though I am now “far from home,†so to speak, there’s nothing like a long summer run or walk by Lake Michigan to instantly make me feel as though I am back within my Caribbean element.
My heritage aside, I am a scientist at heart. I graduated from Morehouse College with a major in Chemistry and minors in Mathematics and Biology. I even got the chance to do undergraduate research at the University of Leeds, the University of Chicago, Ohio-State University, and the IBM Almaden Research Center. I am currently a chemist for a company named U.O.P. in Des Plaines, IL. There I am working to develop gasoline, diesel, and/ or jet fuel from biorenewable products such as Palm Oil, Soybean Oil, Algal Oil (so stinky), the primary component of plant cell walls- lignin- and even various types of grasses.
On top of this, I am excited to begin my graduate level work in Chemical Engineering this Fall at the Illinois Institute of Technology and want to center my research around the same work that I am currently performing at U.O.P. So, as if the last few sentences weren’t enough to let you know, you should be forewarned that I definitely have a nerdy side. Still, apart from my pedantic side, I would LIKE to believe that there are things about my interests and character which definitely offset that. One of these things is my love of music.
Yes, even though I was classical trained in piano from about the age of 10, learning Beethoven Sonatas, Chopin Etudes, and Back Minuets, my college attendance saw me branch away from this formal realm. Since then, I have grown to love songwriting and production, have created about 290 R&B, Pop, Latin, Jazz, and Spiritual songs for myself and others. I’ve also managed to produce two professional CD’s with the stage name Solce and am currently working on a third. When I took the time in life to get the “dreams of stardom†out of my bloodstream, it allowed me to perform in numerous cities such as New York, London, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and my hometown, just to name the major ones.
I was also able to win a few awards along the way for my songwriting, be in a couple touring reggae bands, have my music featured in various independent films and shows, and do some modeling on the side. Because of my musical love, I find myself gravitating toward all things involving music. So I don’t only love listening to one genre but music of all types, from that which can be heard at Ravinia, Orchestra Hall, and the Lyric Opera House, to Jazz of the Green Dolphin, Hip-Hop/ trance spinning at Funky Buddha Lounge, Blues of Blues Chicago, spoken word/ freestyle at summer art festivals, and rock of Lollapallooza. I won’t go overboard and say “music is my life,†but it is such an integral part of me that I will never again try to dismiss it as I once attempted to do my Freshman year in college while under academic duress to retain my Presidential Scholarship.
Along with my academic, career, and musical interests though, I am also someone who takes his spirituality and Christianity quite seriously. I try to have my daily dose of Bible study and prayer, along with weekly Sabbath Service attendance but have never believed in doing so to be hypocritically judgmental, but rather, as a means of constantly improving my character, mind, and state of being. I guess those are the highlights of my life thus far but I eagerly stand at the precipice of the many more that are yet to be made…
