I program a dynamic multi genre radio station, radioIO Unlimited. The IO stands for Internet Only. The slogan of the station is "Just Great Songs" and it is. This is my column from the week of May 7, 2007 about the new music added this week:&
Action Alert the greatest week
so far
just in terms of sheer number of fabulous releases-this week is unmatched in the year 2007!
the all music guide is calling ryan adams forthcoming disc, easy tiger, the greatest of his career. this is not a short wall to scale when you look at the amount of fine discs this cat continues to pour out! see the review on radioIOUnlimited.com and i shall continue to rave on about this week.
loudon wainwright III [i still love “dead skunk” but long ago ceased to measure him by that standard] has a fantastic collection of songs coming out with the clunky multi-tasking title of strange weirdos: music from and inspired by the film knocked up. i was delighted over and over again and i know that i was unduly influenced by the opening track where he extols the virture of no sunshine. personally i am over sunny and hot and it was a joy to hear someone else bask in that view. i moved to washington state from arizona a year ago and when i tell people i moved here because of the weather they laugh and think i’m joking. i’m not! there are a bunch of new loudon songs going in the buzz bin keeping company with the tracks we put in a couple weeks ago from his son, rufus’, new release.
richard thompson continues creating his own mythology with the brand new sweet warrior. we have man in love with self and certain that every woman in the world wants him to call them mama and i mean like mommy not bone mama. i tire of the persona but love the sounds he makes. new tracks going in now!
tori amos puts 24 new tracks on to the new disc along with unsettling pictures of her in a variety of straight haired wigs. it’s just weird enough to make me believe in tori again until i listen too close and the victim lyrics bog me down.
my blood always boils for new blues from james blood ulmer and his new disc is saturated with the resonance of katrina. then in the middle of it he puts “dead presidents” with the catchy chorus, “i’m not broke, just badly bent…” you’ll be singing the rest of that after hearing it once and you’ll have lots of chances to hear it here starting now.
maria taylor gave me one of my fave songs of ‘06 and her new disc is out and in the buzz bin; also new to the fold great lakes simmers banjo soaked sound.
best for last for fans of todd rundgren’s utopia. keyboard maestro roger powell has a new disc that was released in October, fossil poets and we have a review on the radioIO Unlimited home page.
