About Me

The Rootswest whanau was formed in February 2007. A band was formed out of that with a focus on reggae, celebrating traditional roots and creating new waiata. We are a group of people that love our family, our roots, west Auckland and jamming reggae. We are parents and grandparents and as such have a lot of individual experience and ideas that we bring to the whanau. We at times work with other musicians, vocalists and backing vocalists but for our core reggae sound, that is us. We regularly jam and invite friends and whanau to come, party and join in. We aspire to maoritanga, inclusiveness, whanaungatanga, freedom, expression, valuing each member and celebrating individuality, equality and growth. We base our values on tino rangatiratanga, whanau, aroha, truth and justice and this is reflected in our original waiata. Rootswest also seeks to support other artists and musicians in Waitakere and intends to be a platform for creativity, support, growth and development. Rootswest Reggae is an expression of Rootswest whanau and sees itself as a collective, or collaborative community. Rootswest is an acronym that stands for: REDEEMING OUR OPPRESSED THOUGHT SYSTEMS WITHOUT ENCOURAGING SYSTEMATIC TRANSGRESSIONS. You can also check us out on bebo. ..

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Tipene Babbington - Lead vocals, lead guitar, composer. Tip also plays bass, keys, didge, koauau, putatara, pukaea and djembe or hand drum. Kerri ( the Goddess) Babbington - manager, composer, mother, wife, No.1 fan and freaky dancer. Jack (Jacko) Gilbert - Bass, chillout Maori. Jacko picks a mean blues guitar too. Kelman Christie-Haira - Keyboards, Lenny lookalike. Kelm also plays guitar and bass and writes and records his own style of Trip Hop. Hone (Dark Horse) Flavel - Drummer, backing vocals. Hone is a dark horse with many secrets :). We all jam and love it hard. We take time out of our day jobs to satisfy the craving we have that is music.
Influences: Thanks to the late uncle Bob Marley for introducing us to Reggae. Thanks to the beat of a heart which is the primal rhythm of life and allows us the connectedness of brotherhood. Thanks to our mums and dads, koroua and kuia and tipuna for their songs and stories and providing us the richness, that which is family. Thanks to our kids and life partners for putting up with late nights and long rehearsals, noise and home invasions. Thanks to the creative platform of music, for giving us a slate upon which to create our song. Thanks to our Atua.
Sounds Like: Sounds like Reggae mahn.
