About Me

ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) is a U.S. non-profit performing rights organization that currently has over 320,000 members consisting of songwriters, composers, lyricists and music publishers of every genre of music. ASCAP was created and continues to be controlled by composers, songwriters and music publishers, and the Board of Directors is elected by and from members of the organization. ASCAP works to protect it's members by licensing and distributing royalties for the non-dramatic public performances of their copyrighted works. What does this all mean? As an individual songwriter it would be almost impossible to go out and get money from every location that uses your music. Therefore, ASCAP formed in 1914 as an organization that helps bond songwriters, composers, lyricists and publishers together in order to have an easier way of getting paid the monies earned for their creative musical works. ASCAP goes to places where music is used in a commercial setting, including radio, TV, clubs, restaurants, dance schools, airlines, theme parks, grocery stores, etc. and sells them licenses so they can use your music. For each license, ASCAP collects the fees, divides the money up, and sends you your share of the money. What is your responsibility in all this? If you are not already a member, go to www.ascap.com and click "Join ASCAP" and the site will guide you through the rest. It is highly suggested to join both as a writer and publisher, being that they are two seperate streams of income of which you can both be paid. The most important thing for all new and current members is to REGISTER YOUR SONGS WITH ASCAP!!! If your songs are not registered, you won't get paid.If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact us through this myspace account or via e-mail at [email protected]. We're here to help you with all your ASCAP needs!! ..
