About Me

I first got into music when I was 14. When punk came along & me & my mates formed a band called NOTSENSIBLES. We made a few records & had a lot of fun. After NOTSENSIBLES I spent five years as a busker learning fingerstyle guitar playing. I've played in loads of 3-piece bands - I'm a music purist & like the no frills simplicity of a 3-piece. Have been writing songs for years, but never really managed to do anything with them until the last couple of years with my latest 3-piece VINCENT BLACK LIGHTNING. We've been recording for the last couple of years and have got nearly 40 songs down. The first 5 are already out on an EP, and the rest are destined for albums + a couple more EPs and hopefully at least one 7" single. This page is for various odds & sods - old recordings, busking tunes, solo versions of tunes before they're recorded with the band etc. Eli records is my little DIY back room record label - I'm a great believer in the record cover as art form. Yonks ago I got into letterpress & woodblock printing, so I print all the covers by hand & get a buzz out of making records that are nicer than any record company can produce. Oh, and NOTSENSIBLES got back together again.

Songs

As teenagers, Rog and I were writing loads of songs. We were in a band! That's what you did. My early songs disappeared, as it quickly became apparent that Roger was much better at it than I was. He w...

Introducing the Norms

It would be great to say that I'd just signed a teenage sensation band to my record label, but it wouldn't be strictly true. They just sort of grew out of pretty much nowhere - a bit like potatoes. On...

A year in the life on an allotment owner

It was my birthday a fortnight ago, and amazingly there was a reprieve from the endless rain of the Summer. It was warm, dry and sunny. I was sitting on my allotment in the warm hazy sunshine and I ha...

On the15th August 1965, The Beatles played to an audience of 55,600 at the Shea stadium at the start of their North American tour. Touring was becoming unmanageable for them. They can’t hear the...

An Avuncular day

Wake up at half-five and can't get back to sleep - get up & get ready - decide to go to work in the bus for once. That last hill is always windy, but today is spectacularly gusty and it's particul...

Songs From The Underbelly ?

I first started writing songs in The Notsensibles - Roger wrote most of them (he's a bit of an unsung genius), but I wrote one or two (including Sick of Being Normal which we recorded recently with VB...
