ElWarren (SPOON) Weatherspoon has served as a professional drummer, songwriter and musical director for more than 30 years. Spoon grew up in the music industry in Chicago under the influence of his father, Fletcher Weatherspoon; founder and first manager of The Flamingos, known for the classic hit, I Only Have Eyes for You. He began his career at the age of 10 studying at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and was introduced to the music business at a young age, working with such artists as the Chi-lites, Tyrone Davis, Otis Clay and veteran rhythm and blues musicians. His first recording experience occurred at Staple Studios, in Chicago owned and operated by the famous Staple Singers.
Although, Spoon is most notable for his hard driving, R & B funk pocket groove flavor; he has also earned a considerable amount of recognition in the blues and jazz arena. Inspired by drummers, such as, Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown), Buddy Rich and Steve Ferrone.
Spoon has toured the world frequently in Europe, Asia and extensively in the United States. He is known for his accomplishments previously with Hall & Oates, LTD, Santana, Tracy Chapman, and countless others; to include, blues recording artists Memphis Gold and Bobby Parker. A member for many, many years with the distinguished legendary group Heatwave - best known for the hits: Always and Forever, Boogie Nights, Groove Line and Mind Blowin' Decision.
Heatwave's most notable accomplishments are: four Grammy nominations; five gold singles; three gold, two platinum and two double platinum albums; and their most recent nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
While still a member of Heatwave, Spoon also tours with such performers as the Emotions, Jean Carne, the Fonics, Peaches & Herb and also the female R&B group The Jones Girls. He created the "Unit Band" which is known for its performances with various nationally known recording artists.
One of his most memorable moments occurred when he teamed up with Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mack to conduct drum clinics across the country, showcasing the many styles of R&B, Blues, Rock and Funk.
Spoon has scored music in a production for National Geographic and The Discovery Channel as well as performed national "jingle" commercial spots.
Spoon serves on Dove Productions, Board of Directors, in Chicago, IL with his three brothers; the production company was founded by his father in 1973.
ElWarren "Spoon" Weatherspoon was the first national endorsement from Mapleworks Drums, with his custom Mapleworks emerald lacquer kit.
ElWarren "Spoon" Weatherspoon created the “Unit Band” which is known for its performances with various nationally known recording artists. He is also a member of the "Heatwave" band and holds endorsements by: Mapleworks Drums & Hot Sticks Drumsticks, Signature Series Drumsticks.
