~PSYCHOPATH ~
~ The true history of Psychopath~ Psychopath gained East Coast success in the mid-1980s, thanks to a large and very loyal underground following in several states. From 1984 - 1988, and with a Halloween reunion show in 1994, Psychopath performed in Delaware, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Baltimore, and New York City, literally destroying many stages with their outrageous stage show. It all begins when Johnny Bates decided to confront (Paul Stevies) who already had long black hair and an old beat up tour bus in his driveway. Bates recalls, “He looked like Alice Cooper with a Patridge Family Tour Bus, so I thought he might be somebody.†Paul Stevies, a seasoned musician, who had already played in bands with friends Tom Keifer (Cinderella), and Michael Kelly Smith (Britny Fox) had just left the New Jersey band (The Dead End Kids). Paul invited Johnny in his house and they started to jam around and it clicked. Within one week Psychopath was born and Johnny’s hair was freshly dyed blue black.
After discussing the outrageous new band concept, direction, and writing many new originals for the band they started auditioning numerous singers and drummers."One singer in Jersey sang in his bathroom and went in with a trench coat on while we had to listen from the living room; his girlfriend hung with us, she was a cool Elvira clone but he was a very strange character", Bates recalls. "I remember we named him Dr. Bubbles since he may have been in the tub singing". For drums they finally settled with Sal(Poison) Latorre, a drummer and talented live performer from Philadelphia who also played in the previous band (Saints in Hell) with Tom Keifer and Paul Stevies. But after about a year Sal was replaced with George Raymond on drums, "Probably one of the best drummers in the area", Stevies recalls, who was playing in the band Sorcerer. For vocals and guitars Jeff Burns was recruited. Burns was a talented local musician who Stevies already knew well through a mutual friend Nicky Pilotta. Stevies also previously played briefly with Burns in the local band Pirate Eddie. Now the bands chemistry, charisma, and talent was in place to "Kick Ass".
Psychopath soon started rehearsing in Maryland at an old creepy closed down paper mill called Veaseys that was in the middle of Blackness. Stevies recalls going outside and not being able to see anything, “But on full moons it wasn’t too bad just a nice place for a murder.â€
Psychopath played it’s first show in 1985 at Minggles in Delaware, and from 1985 until 1988, all the boys in Psychopath lived and breathed Rock’n Roll playing everywhere and leaving havoc behind. Some highlights and crazy memories for the members of Psychopath: Opening for Megedeth at Swizzles in York, PA- The Peace Sells Tour, trashing the stage at the Fantasy Lounge in PA. with busted glass/mirrors and their manager saving them from getting arrested, playing shows in N.Y.C. with Teeze, cranking up ACCEPT on the stereo in our tour bus...music-better than any drug, taping tons of porn to a car in york and driving down the road..."We did some real crazy shit !" Burns recalls. Producing interest from the late Eric Carr of KISS, shaving off our eyebrows and looking like embryos with black lipstick, staying at Half Breed Billy Grams house and playing the Saints In Hell reunion performance at the Galaxy N.J. with most of the original line-up, playing for 1000s of rock fans at the Fairgrounds in York, PA.- with members of Twisted Sister~and religious fanatics marching and protesting the show outside with (Satan signs) and psychopath's roadie "Nicky" telling them Psychopath is straight from "HELL", Days on the Greens at sunrise, playing at the famous HammerJacks in Baltimore and also many times at Lamours in N.Y.C. "We can't forget hanging out on weekends in Baltimore at the Seagull and somehow getting home days later after leaving a 2/3 day party", Stevies recalls... "We lived it!"... Also we can't forget the once 5th member~ in 1986, they decided to add a lead vocalist and"Mike Combs" got the spot. Combs was from Baltimore and sang in Psychopath for about a year. "He was a good singer but it didn't work out", Bates recalls.
For all those loyal fans who witnessed 4 black haired punk kids in their early 20's and teens, with black lipstick, spitting blood, running all around the stage, and sometimes fist fighting on the way to the show… they will always remember “One Hell of a Great Show and having a Great Time!â€
