Hilda, a singer-songwriter inspired by the legendary Motown artists of the 60s, wrote her first song at the age of 10 and posted it straight to Berry Gordy at Hitsville USA. Feeling sure he would add her to his team of songwriters such as Holland/Dozier/Holland, who she so admiredHilda waited for a reply. Blissfully unaware of the institutions demise Hilda continued to listen to the Motown compilation albums she had bought from her local Woolworths at the age of seven and they continued to motivate her to write songs.
Adding to this, a tape left by her uncle when he died, also proved a great source of inspiration. An eclectic mix of artists including Collin Blunstone, Jake Thackery, Joe Cocker, John Lennon and Elvis Costello and many more interspersed with out takes from local poet John Cooper Clarke. Later she was to discover the tape to be a lyrical diary of her uncles life, Hilda was a ten-year-old introduced to a world of music, which was to have a profound effect on her style of writing to this day.
During her college years Hilda experimented with various musical styles and landscapes for her developed emotive lyrics but it wasnt until artist manager Ron Atkinson of Atkinson Family 33 introduced her to like-minded musician Tim Sawyer that she felt she could truly portray the emotion held in her lyrics.
The music you hear today is a powerful mix of both the Country Blues and Soul influences from her childhood to produce an all-together passionate sound. Its personal, in places bittersweet and quite simply everybody loves hilda!
