..Way back in 1987, dissatisfied with their current musical endeavours and being pursued by irate studio landlords, Simon Tonx and Bob Wheatley escaped from Parramatta and migrated to Darlinghurst. It is here they proceeded to spend many nights and days locked up in CBS studios burning the candle at both ends. Having given up on several musical directions with bands such as "Torn", "Rapture 1440", and "Remo Lo Lo", one night after working late in the studio, with the fabulous Kareena, Killer Instinct was born somewhere between Elis Pizza Bar,Oxford street and the Siro Kuro japanese restaurant in Kings Cross.
With a regular rehearsal studio booked on a weekly basis the search was on for other members.
After a run of near miss auditions with wide mouth frogs, British backline musical production proteges and vocalists of varying skill and ability, the word came from a mutual friend that a certain "Sean Bosco" was worthy of investigation.
Now it is here that the memory banks are a little fuzzy, perhaps due to the pharmaceutical abuse of that particular era, however, I seem to recall that we decided to have TWO singers !
Yes that's right...Sean and a female. We ran some ads in the local music rags and were jamming (literally) with a bevy of girls straight away. Some of them couldn't sing so well but had other talents and attributes that left us breathless, stunned, and sometimes quite impressed!
After a few minutes of tough decision making we finally settled on our girl. (She shall remain unnamed to protect her innocence).
So with the assistance of "Stewart Gillies" on drums and "William James Wilson" on guitar we played our first gig in a golf club in Sydney's north western suburbs.
It was a raging success...people actually danced (although none of them squirmed as much as the female singer as she broke out in a rash of butterflies and frayed nerves)!
Stagefright !.....So it was off to the Siro Kuro and goodbye to Alex!
(Oops!) There's that name!
Back in the safer sanctum of the inner city, we decided the girl singer thing was a dumb, although fun, idea and we continued recording and rehearsing.
After a time it was back up to the Siro Kuro and Mr Gillies parted ways.
We were on the hunt for a new drummer.
Let the auditions begin.......again .....(to be continued)
