About Me

Ian Egan grew up in Chicago. After a stint in the Marines & in college, he got a good job & started a family while diligently climbing the corporate ladder, just what everyone wanted & expected him to do. But, as sometimes happens in Life, Ian hit a rough patch of very bad luck and he lost everything. If nothing else, his life crumbling around him gave him wonderful experiences for writing poetry! After his life fell apart he moved to the East Coast & started a new career as a freelance cartoonist in NYC, & actually made a good living at it for a few years. He was published as an author (short stories & poetry) & was a weekly host of the the oldest poetry open mike in Connecticut for several years. Then, as the millenium was turning in 2000, his friends bugged him about making a New Year's resolution. It was the millenium, after all! But, rather then make a resolution to STOP doing something, Ian (who played keyboards, the Irish tin whistle, & the harmonica among other instruments) decided that he wanted to START something he's always wanted to do... play the guitar. Thus started The Obsession. The poetry turned into music, & Ian played open mikes around the Northeast for a couple of years gaining experience & fans. But after a fateful confrontation following a performance at one particular open mike (two other performers were upset because Ian played only original songs, & made their cover songs look bad) Ian decided to go where the music was... the live music capitol of the world, Austin, Texas. He has been a proud (and happy) resident of Austin since August 2007.

Influences:
Sounds Like: Lyrically, Ian's poetry was inspired by Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Jim Morrison, the storytelling of Jim Croce & Harry Chapan, & a thousand others who can cleverly turn a phrase. As much as he would love to claim to sound like Ray Lamontagne or Jack Johnson (two contemporary favorites,) he definitely has a style & a sound all his own.Myspace Graphics
