How can the NAKED MOLE RATS be described? Always, the song takes priority - sometimes acoustic guitars and strings, sometimes post-punk slam, sometimes rock and sometimes looped beats and keyboards, the NAKED MOLE RATS take a wide variety of influences and mix them all up, in an attempt to take songwriting, both lyrically and musically, to a new place.
The NAKED MOLE RATS is a musical project by a mid-40's post-punker named Spike, in Northeast Ohio. Spike writes, orchestrates, plays guitars, fretless bass, keyboards and any related samples, drums and programs, produces and sings. Astrogirl chips in as Spike's lifetime creative sidekick and writes some very cool lyrics and even yells sometimes. Spike has been in bands since the 1980's and writing for many, many (keep going: many, many...) years. Originally from outside Boston, as a pup he move to and was part of a number of big Cleveland regional bands, like Wussy in the mid 1990's, Stop the World in the early 2000's. He played jazz for a few years before starting the short lived "Dutch Resistance" punk project in 2006.
In late 2007, Spike created his alter-ego NAKED MOLE RATS with the goal of stretching his own songwriting and execution. We hope you enjoy the multi-dimensional approach to punk and rock that we are taking. We want to keep the music as free as possible (unless this thing really gets going).
