Coming from the gray world of Buffalo, NY, I have been enchanted with the colorful expressiveness of New Orleans, ever since I moved here. As a cab driver, I have seen it from all facets and am forever moved and awed.
On hiatus from cab driving, due to medical reasons, I have had a little time to pursue some other interests, while trying to replace my lost income. I have always been intrigued by the spirit and light heartedness of the city. My heart skips a beat whenever I hear the brass of an approaching second line and or see one of the many murals painted around town. To me they are especially poignant, because of their lack of permanence and vulnerability to being lost forever.
In an attempt to capture a thin slice of history, and preserve a little bit of that uniquely New Orleans culture,
I have created:
"Street Signs Of New Orleans"
Along with the mass destruction of Hurricane Katrina, many of New Orleans's street signs where washed away. In the ever animated manner and adaptive nature of the citizens of this irreplaceable city, they fashioned their own handmade signs.
I have designed this collage as a representation of the signs that can still be seen all over the city today, it is a continuing reminder of the resiliency and artistic soul of New Orleanians. They are however temporary, because the progress of rebuilding will require these signs to be replaced with the standard city signs.
