About Me

Born in Portsmouth, Ohio on the river that splits with Kentucky Rich Skaggs was raised the traditional way with the same values. Rich was always musically inclined and would make music out of anything. At the age of 12 his Mother (the hardest workin woman he knows) asked him what he wanted for Christmas that year and he told her a guitar. She wasn't surprised. He fell in love with that guitar and sat in his room for hours on end teaching himself how to play and learning songs. He then understood why he felt an odd jolt whenever he heard George Jones, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty and John Anderson sing and play, he wanted to sing and play as well. When he was 17 he started singin at a little place that held maybe 30 people. The owner always told him to just stare at that big ole clock out there on the wall in front and sing like you're in here alone.Like most musicians he was bitten by the music bug and his dream became very clear to him. He wrote 3 songs when he was about to turn 18 that held titles such as "I'm Not That Lucky" "110%" and "Old Memories". He worked and saved his money along with money his Mother gave him and went to a small studio in his 1970 Ford Torino 4 speed and was out to record the first songs that he had ever written. Those songs have hardly ever been heard and are still only available on Cassette to this day. His efforts took him to a few different places, he sang on a radio show that was broadcast from a barn in Kentucky called WKKJ Saturday Night Jamboree with Colonel Brown and also recorded various songs for other local people. He kept his dream alive through his twenties and visited Nashville quite often to sing in small venues and clubs and or songwriter nights. When he was 27 he was sittin in a club in downtown Nashville alone and heard this beautiful girls voice singin other women's songs, and it dawned on him that her emotion wasn't as great as it should be. The writer holds the greatest emotion for the song in Rich's eyes.He told himself he would keep writing his own songs. He went back to his hotel room and sat there and started writing one of the first songs that would be on his up coming self titled CD "Rich Skaggs". He went back to Ohio and finished his thoughts he had in Nashville and put them on paper. He wrote all 13 songs on this CD in that same week. He recorded that CD without a record deal and completely independently. Its all pure Rich Skaggs music. The self titled CD is previewed here on this page. Rich Skaggs is now on his new journey toward bein a full-time Nashvillian and songwriter.
