The official Internet homepage of young singer, songwriter, composer, poet and general talent Iness Mezel opens with the line Mezel is of Berber (Kabyle) origin. However, when you press play and sit back in your listening sofa, it’s a statement that seems entirely irrelevant, initially at least. For the way in which Mezel combines the fruits of her classical training with a boundless musical curiosity and evident prowess as an arranger produces something complete, undissectible and unclassifiable, something free of complexes about traditions and cultural nationalism. It just sounds like expertly crafted international pop peppered with Joni Mitchell, Sibeba or Capercaillie déjà-vus.
Going in deeper, you discover that all the songs are indeed in Tamazight, the language of the Berbers, and that some of the tunes contain powerful echoes of traditional Kabyle melodies and mannerisms. But it’s easy to be fooled, because Mezel’s music somehow sounds stateless and outernational, even though she’s obviously deeply attached to her own Berber ancestry and all that it has bequeathed her.
The lyrics are intense, honest and personal, and certainly don't wave the big flag so favoured by some other modern Kabyle singers. Standout songs are the title-track “Lën”, the burbling “Awal”, and the gentle bluesy “A Yemma”. Listening to Lën, you get a strong feeling that you’re witnessing a major player in the making, both in terms of Berber music and just gorgeous non-aligned pop tunes. "
