Big praise to Kevin Fritzgerald aka DJ Organic, the director of
"Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme".
This documentary film has won several prices, for example from the
Florida film festival, the Los Angeles Independent film festival and one special price
for documentary film making. It was produced over a period of 7 years
from a non-profit organisation called " the Center of Hip Hop education",
most of the time with borrowed cameras. The film entertained audience with rare recordings
of the greatest Hip Hop legends from the 80..s and the golden times up till present.
Beside interviews and performances the viewers can see one of the most famous
underground battles from the 90..s between Craig G and MC Supernatural at the
"New Music Seminar", also MC Supernaturals birthday battle against Craig G.
In "Freestyle: the Art of Rhyme", both open up about their meeting with each other.
Even the Living Legends have something to say and female Hip Hop has also a place
in this film. Through the improvised cinema accompanied "Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme"
Bahamadia, Kirby Dominant, Darkleaf, Diving Styler, J-Pro, Jurassic 5, Otherwize, Juice and
many more artists in the world of Hip hop culture, that is show by "Freestyle: The Art Of Rhyme"
with all its rules of do..s and dont..s.
Inclusive the movement from basketball courts to "Good Life" and the legendary Lyricist..s
Lounge.
"Freestyle: the Art of Rhyme" explains the often misunderstood art of freestyle as an
individual and spiritual art, based on community, politic, philosophy, critic,
experiences and thoughts, with the english language as its main tool. This
DVD features underground as well as famous artists. Unfortuately, in my opinion the
film didn t include enough of the Hieroglyphics, because they were mentioned, but not shown.
But this minor defect is compensated by rare pictures from Notorious B.I.G in Brooklyn, never really known
as a freestyle mc, or Black Thought, who is doing classical freestyle on words from the crowd.
"Freestyle:The Art of Rhyme" is very informativ DVD and offers a feature and a freestyle version plus some unique extras. For example, Aesop Rock, Slug, EL-P Cipher.
I enjoyed "Freestyle:The Art of Rhyme" from the first to the last minute an think you will do, too….BLAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!
