With a slew of persons looking to brandish titles in the city of Baltimore there are few that truly deserve the titles they claim. Some call themselves King, Prince or invent some grandiose moniker. In some instances though, there are persons that live up to these titles. They do not create them, they are given and one instance of this would be "The Voice of Baltimore Hip-Hop", Shaka Pitts.
Pitts, a native of Brooklyn, New York has found his way to view and be a part of all things artistic by applying experience and a positive outlook to all his endeavors. His earliest acquaintance with hip hop was becoming a prominent battle MC on the underground circuit and then furthering his craft by eventually landing two recording contracts in mid nineties. Shortly thereafter Shaka 'migrated' to Baltimore and began to directly affect the music community by pummeling opponents on Radio One 92Q's Tuesday night fights.
In between taking out the competition Pitts was invited to join the production crew of a major motion picture being filmed partly in the Baltimore area. What was supposed to be a 1 day gig, Pitts parleyed into a 2 month opportunity working on "XXX-2 State Of The Union" Starring Ice Cube, Samuel Jackson and Xzibit. Shortly after his return from the west coast Shaka focused on production and enrolled at Ohio’s Recording Workshop School of Audio and Music Production and graduated at the top of his class as a certified audio engineer.
After graduation 92Q came courting again and Shaka went on to become the coordinator of the Tuesday night fights event and established a lasting relationship with the radio station. Pitts began to introduce the segment under his alias Spitts Mcman and quickly became an advocate for artists in the Baltimore hip hop community. The popularity of Tuesday Night Fights allowed Shaka to begin hosting reoccurring hip hop artist based events in multiple locations all over the city, Hip Hop 101, Speaker Boxing, and his own well received 15 Minutes of Fame. Pitts is an entrepreneurial force in the regional scene. His company, "The Spitters Club Network" is for music professionals looking to further their careers. The "Network" provides consultations, marketing, recording services and mentoring for artist. With so many talents, Shaka's main focus remains on the artistic community and how he might contribute to that. He also acts as a media personality on his popular Internet radio show, Real Talk With Spitts Mcman, 15 Minutes of Fame a television show. In addition to his other pursuits he was also tapped to guest host the Association Of Black Media Workers "Choice Award" nominated television show "The Y Factor" which continues to increase his net worth in the Mid-Atlantic artistic community.
Always looking for new and innovative ways to maximize the Shaka Pitts brand it was only natural that he increased his presence on the web. Pitts partnered with Baltimore based bmorehh.com a company whose niche is covering local hip hop as well as creating his own online community called The Club Network. Pitts also headed a campaign to increase Baltimore/DC relations by uniting artist from multiple genres. Because he is deeply rooted in the Baltimore music community its important for Shaka to reach out on a grass roots level. He helped organize the inaugural Baltimore Hip Hop Town Hall Meeting, which was created as a forum for artist to dialogue about the Baltimore hip hop scene.
These accomplishments along with credits for movie sound tracks, and contributing to the demos and singles of signed artists have aided Shaka Pitts in becoming one of the most respected personalities in the Regional scene. Lasting relationships with clubs and promoters around the city, and various articles in local publications allow Shaka Pitts to remain a firm representation of the music community. When Shaka is asked about his activity in the community his reply is; "I am attempting to increase the artistic community's net worth by increasing their network…"
