Deeper Meaning, Soul, Purpose; These are the driving forces behind Giles O'keefe, what he really puts on the musical canvas are the images one strives for in searching for enlightenment and perpetual bliss. Starting early in the underground rave scene of the west coast in the early 90s, Giles spent his limited US Coast Guard Salary on some of the first Seattle Events in 1990 and 1991, but being in the Military served it's purpose in that Giles was fortunate enough to take fifteen dollar military airlift command flights on c-130s that flew him to the heart of the west coast, San Francisco. It's here, that Giles met and fell in love with techno. Techno, when properly delivered told an entire story, summed up where we all were bliindly headed into an unknown future. Many of us, thought the precious music would be lost, disregarded, and scantly produced, at best! With the advent of techno, however, came another deeper and entrancing yet soulful expression. Giles bumped into house music. And House Music Bumped back!Several life experiences, years, packed club nights, hours spent learning about drugs, booze, and human nature, turned Giles a bit more savvy but jaded, and he wouldn't find himself happy again until after his military career, and until meeting a dreadlocked house and techno dj at a rave called 'Ten Little Indians' in 1992. The DJ, Josh Wink. The Ten Little Indians crew introduced Giles to a really good time, and Josh's ego-less interaction with him inspired Giles to learn the craft of beatmatching.Giles then, later residing in the DC and Baltimore area sees the legacy of chicago's house and detroit's techno manifest as the entire world, it seemed, became consummed with djs, dj culture, and nightlife. In 1994, at Scott Henry's four floor ghetto loft project in Baltimore, Giles managed to wreck his way through his first live set. Scott however, played circles around Giles that night, and the humility of failed performances taught Giles to really want to become the greatest manipulator of music the world has ever seen.Inspirations of GREAT house djs came from those first days in Baltimore. Learning to mix and playing out in several DC bars such as the front page taught Giles how to listen, learn and respect the crowd. He learned how to interact and build and release the proper musical 'tension' in order to: not only keep the floor packed, but to also, keep the bar making money. Two skills that not every jock has!Life again twisted and in 1995, in Albuquerque NM, Giles single-handedly finances his first underground event. It's a wholloping success, Darryl Strickland and other originals from New Mexico rock the event, and afterward, this solidifies Giles' quest to party and dj until the end of time.Giles then moved to San Francisco, in the Winter of 1996, and there, he played house music with some of the Bay Area's Greatest house music legends including SenSei, RobSoul, Markie (Wicked), Garth... just to name a few. There, in San Francisco, Giles started to teach djing, and did so, with residencies at 'Up Above' (1015 Folsom), The HiFi Lounge, Loft, 111 Minna, Top of hill, and many other spots: from bedroom/kitchen gigs to Giles largest gig in 1998, at 117 Townsend, in front of 700 people as he opened the floor for the Chemical Brothers in their first San Francisco Appearance. In 2002, Giles relocated to San Diego, where he promoted, dj'd and started producing music. His collaborations would later go to print, and his love for producing music would lead him to friends and djs like Steve Graham (2007-RIP), Ian McPhearson, and the southern california house scene opened it's doors to Giles. He'd later play with Thomas Sahs, Brian Cabalic, Eddie Spettro, Olivier Desmet, Jaywood (El-Wood), Scott K., Roy Davis, Jr., Lady D, Tortured Soul, Pat Nice, and many many many good and great people. In 2004, Giles started work on his own record label, Cielotribe Recordings. Cielotribe has fourteen 12" releases to this day, and soon the cielotribe site will be a repository for gigswaps, record pooling, etc. Stay tuned! It'll be Exciting!
