• NE - Because of one death penalty case in Nebraska, the Madison County Public Defender’s Office doesn’t have time to meet with their regular clients and prepare adequate defenses, in violation of their code of ethics. Attorneys are withdrawing from all new cases to which they are appointed. (Lincoln Journal Star, Sept. 22, 2003)

We are Nebraskans Against the Death Penalty.
We are Nebraskans from all walks of life, from throughout the state. We come from many different religions, political perspectives, and ethnic backgrounds.
We are farmers, ranchers, teachers, clergy, health care workers, lawyers, students, parents, senior citizens, business people, homemakers. And, yes, some of us have experienced the murder of family members.
We are engaging Nebraskans in respectful conversations about the death penalty.
By listening to the concerns of our fellow Nebraskans, exchanging experiences, facts and insights we are changing minds.
- We organize ordinary Nebraskans to write and visit with their state senators to give a personal expression of the growing death penalty opposition among their constituents.
- We provide speakers and videos to classes, civic clubs, church groups, and others.
- We facilitate a network of activists statewide with advocacy training, informational resources, and regular consultation.
- We build coalitions, working with other concerned groups and the faith community.
- We write op-ed pieces and letters to the editor and hold press conferences.
- We take a stand, organizing public rallies including a vigil every Monday at noon at the state capitol.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

****HOW TO GET INVOVED****

*Serve on the Steering Committee (Board of Directors). Become a Point Person, help organize your community, and be a liaison with your state senator.

*Serve on the Faith Committee and help rally faith communities in united opposition to the death penalty.

*Be a representative from another organization in the Coalition for Abolition in Nebraska (C.A.N.) and help move abolition forward.

*Set up a meeting / public forum with your state senator. Write your local, state, and federal representatives asking them to support abolition.

*Write editorials to your local newspapers outlining the common sense initiative of abolition.

*Volunteer your time to NADP (organizing, recruiting, office work, general assistance).

*Provide office supplies (envelopes, paper, folders, copy machine, etc.) We always need this stuff!

*Help find/write grants for NADP.

*Help organize local high school and college chapters.

*Become familiar with the issues surrounding the death penalty and then share what you learn with other people.

*Stay informed and keep in touch! E-mail NADP with your contact information. We will add you to our list for action alerts and news updates. Visit our web site regularly.

*Spread the word: The death penalty says more about us than it does about any criminal. We deserve better than to become what we abhor.More and more Nebraskans are deciding that the time is now to end the death penalty.
In 1999 Nebraska became the first state to legislatively approve a moratorium on the death penalty, a measure that was vetoed by the Governor.
In 2004 the Coalition for Abolition in Nebraska presented the legislature with 12,000 signatures of Nebraskans who support life inprisonment as an alternative to the death penalty.
A 2007 poll of Nebraskans found that a majority support alternatives to the death penalty.
Nebraska came within ONE VOTE of advancing a bill that would have ended capital punishment during the 2007 legislative session.
We need you! Together we can make the needed difference to end the death penalty in the 2008 session of the state legislature!
If you would like to join with others in your community to be a part of this effort please contact us at:

"IT" - a poem

"IT" I was recently asked if I was for "it" or against "it"?  I said, well I feel "it's" fair in the right situation.  But when I started to think about "it" long after the conversation was...
