About Me

EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT....ERIE"S HOTTEST DANCE PARTY!ALL NEW!LOCATED ON THE CORNER OF 3RD AND FRENCH(301 french street downtown Erie Pennsylvania)Hi Guys Welcome to official Sullivans Pub MySpace :) Every Friday is 75 Cent Drink Fridays! Here is the Sullivans Story !!!! In 1905 a prominent first ward politician named John L. Sullivan and his wife Alice opened Sullivans Cafe. John and Alice were life long residents of the first of the first ward and members of St Patricks Church. Under the ownership of John and Alice, Sullivans became a central meeting place for all the residents of the area and a pillar in the Irish Community! Also John and Alice were known to be generous people having used some of their income from Sullivans to help many irish families through the Great Depression. In 1950, Margaret Sullivan Heintz, daughter of John and Alice Sullivan, assumed ownership of the cafe. Margarets brother, emmet J. "Jiggs" Sullivan, helped her run the cafe. Jiggs was a retired fireman from fire station #1 on french street, just two blocks from the cafe. It was during this time that people started recognizing Sullivans for having great food! maggie and Jiggs served a menu consisting of irish and American fare. The cafe also known as the "Glue Pot" because "once you went in you couldnt get out". In fact, one afternoon the firmen from station #1 went into Sullivans for lunch and wound up staying all afternoon playing cards and having the best time! When building directly behind the firehouse went up in flames, the neighborhood people rushed down to Sullivans and had to drag the firemen out of the "Glue Pot" In 1960, The Powers Family, another Irish blood, purchased Sullivans. During this time, the cafe was a regular stop for many Hamot Hospital employees and Gannon college students. There were many a happy hour that started when Mr. Powers would appear from the kitchen with a large freshly baked ham and without looking up and saying with an irish accent, "well now, would anyone be wantin' a bit O' this delicious ham? then he would slice the ham into sandwiches, which the patrons would pass down the length of the bar. In 1989 the cafe was purchased by the current owners. Intent upon preserving a part of Erie History, the friends invested time, effort and most of their resources into completely restoring the nearly century old building while retaining the irish flavor so popular in the Erie Community. The present owners expanded the food menu, remodeled the dining room, kitchen, and added a dance floor! with some of the best DJ's in the Tri-State area. While Sullivans has always been a traditional stop for a green beer and a corned beef sandwiche on St Patricks day, it continues to offer a year round lunch menu to the downtown folksand provides food, entertainment, and comaraderie. SULLIVANS ALWAYS WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE....A GREAT ERIE TRADITION!
