About Me

My name is Miki. I am now a sophomore studying at Soka University of America. Originally from the suburbs of Chicago. I'm a simple yet determined individual. I think a lot about life and question many things but in the end I base my life to Nichiren Buddhism. I was born as a Buddhist but I really began to build and understand my faith at SUA. I've gone through many hardships and struggles but I have absolutely no regrets with the decisions I've made thus far.
Life besides academics consists of daily SGI activities, Josho Daiko practices, Humanism in Action activities, and being with my friends. My interests are animals, nature, sports, world cultures, dancing, and japanese music. I love to study philosophy and spanish. I am a more one-to-one person rather than group talks. I only drink alcohol when I'm with people I can trust. I don't smoke or do drugs. I don't like to party. I rather spend time at a quiet place and self-reflect. One may think I'm a boring person but I like living a simple life. I don't rely on others for my own happiness. I like who I am and thats something I take pride in. =)
My mentor is Daisaku Ikeda, President of SGI and Founder of my university. I hope to advance side-by-side with him in achieving world peace. I will never forget the debt of gratitude that I owe him. He has taught me so many things about life but most importantly he has taught me, through his own actions and words, the significance of Nichiren Buddhism. He has taught me to be idealistic and optimistic, but to always continue seeking the truth and justice in the reality of the world that we live in. I will never be defeated by negativity and pessimism.
I dream of working for the United Nations in the future. I dream of living in South America, Africa, and Japan. I dream of helping those who are suffering. I dream of becoming a humanitarian worker in the third world countries. I dream of becoming a truly capable leader in the 21st century. As one can tell, I dream about many things, but I know that only through taking life step-by-step will I be able to actualize these dreams.
This is my story. zettaini makenai.

What makes SUA so different?

During spring break I had a lot of fun visiting Hollywood, watching the sunset at the beach with random friends, goofing around with Chie & Matsuyama late at night, having a grea...
