Keahi Conjugacion has a distinct musical personality: a true jazz singer's spontaneity and freedom mixed with a reverence for the music of her native Hawaii and the bluesy styling of classic singers like Dinah Washington and Etta James.
She's small in stature, but her voice has tremendous power - a legacy of the soul and jazz singers she loves. Her love for Hawaiian music can be heard in the way she caresses a tender lyric and in her sensitivity to the nuances of the Hawaiian language.
Keahi started her singing career at the age of 17, singing with local Top 40 and R&B bands and recording as a background vocalist. Seeking to expand her musical horizons, she moved to Seattle, Washington, where she began appearing and recording as a jazz artist. This was a period of musical growth for Keahi, as she took on the influences of classic jazz masters and developed her improvisational skills.
Her years on the U.S. Mainland helped Keahi hone her skills in a range of venues, including Seattle Supersonics game, the Bumbershoot Festival, and nightclubs like Dimitriou's Jazz Alley, the New Orleans Creole Restaurant, Wild Ginger, Salute, and Grazie's. New York was the most thrilling and educating experience for Keahi as she studied the skill of "scatting for 2 Years and sang in New York and Harlem for nearly 2 years. She has also toured Japan as well as entertained our troops abroad.
At home in Hawaii, she created a sensation at the 2003 Hawaii International Jazz Festival with her debut performance of her version of Andy Cummings' "Waikiki," which is one of the featured songs on the "Jazz Hawaiian Style" CD.
She was joined on her Maui festival performances by legendary guitarist Larry Coryell. Keahi performed a repeat performance at the 2004 Hawaii International Jazz Festival.
Keahi's 2004 CD, "Jazz Hawaiian Style" takes a jazz artist's free-wheeling approach to a collection of hapa-haole and Hawaiian songs, combining familiar favorites with original songs. The recording features a roster of Hawai'i's finest jazz musicians, including former Stan Kenton alto saxophone master Gabe Baltazar.
Her upcoming release "My Paradise" will leave you spellbound!
