Subreact was a project formed by Chicago producer/re-mixer Matthew Skaggs. Hailing from Boulder, Colorado, Matt got his start with electronic music through the encouragement of his parents in school, and later as a DJ at the now legendary weekend loft parties at the 118 1/2 Jefferson Street loft in Ft. Collins Colorado.
Following a move to Chicago in 1995, and meeting & partnering with Chicago drumming legend Felix Miklik, Matt began a touring stint, mixing and Dj'ing for the likes of 13mg, Sister Machine Gun, Test Department and Sheep on Drugs. Following the tours, Matt and Felix setup a space in Chicago's Lincoln Park to begin work on 13mg's record "Eternicate" with Howie Beno and co-producer Bon Harris of Nitzer Ebb. Matt would go on to remix the first single, "Careless" with Felix at Chicago Trax. Following, Matt also an cut an unreleased remix of Sheep on Drug's "X-lover".
In 1996, Matt met Steven Collins, founder the new media experiment The Lab and a new friendship was born. Matt participated in a series of live webcast and recordings with Steve and The Lab cast. Following a Lab performance by Dead Voices on Air, Matt and Steve went into the studio and remixed live Dead Voice on Air material from the show into an epic breakbeat track, later incorperated in a DVOA video.
Matt also had begun work his solo project - Subreact. The project was a fusion of breakbeats, ambient field recordings, and modular synthesizer work. A limited release of 100 copies circulated in late 99, followed by a series of live shows and DJ sets around Chicago and Colorado.
Subreact was ended in the summer of 2000. Matt has gone on to work with Kill Hannah as programmer for "Welcome to Chicago", and "For Never and Never", as well as remixing the single "Kennedy" under his new Boombox United moniker.
