About Me

Rasmus Lyberth Band - Ajajajaa
Rasmus Lyberth – Greenland’s greatest singer
Rasmus Lyberth possesses a voice like nothing you have heard before. A voice full of passion, strength, softness, and love of his unusual and extreme country, Greenland.
An island and a country full of beauty, wilderness, and contrasts. The world’s biggest island, which is also a part of the Danish realm. Hence we are allowed to consider Rasmus Lyberth a Danish singer too, especially as Rasmus has always toured and spent a lot of time in Denmark.
Actually, he lives in Denmark now, but still it is Greenland that inspires his songwriting.
And he will always keep singing in his native language, because it is so full of passion and power, and he sings it with such personality and charisma. Somehow it makes sense in spite of the fact that most people do not understand a word of it. The language tells the stories anyway.
Not to say that the lyrics of the songs are not important. They are indeed. They are songs of the nature and wild landscapes of Greenland, of its people and their lives, loves, and often difficult conditions. Of Greenland here, now and in the future, of its development and potential in a new and fastmoving world. The songs capture the spirit and spirituality of this unique island and its only 50.000 inhabitants caught between old culture and modern living. Rasmus Lyberth sings them with such force and such a strong, melodic voice that makes you listen with your heart. His singing has been described as hearing the icebergs break open. It certainly creates beautiful pictures of the arctic nature, the ice and snow, the white and green, the water and the Northern lights in one’s head.
He was born in 1951 in the town of Maniitsoq, moved to the capital of Nuuk, where he first performed at the age of 12. At 15 he started sailing the seas, but at 18 had the vision that he would become a singer. So that is what he went ahead and did. Along the way he became an actor as well, and was nominated for a Danish Bodil Award for his leading role in “The Heart of Light”. For the past 30 years he has sung his songs to great acclaim in many European countries, Canada, Mexico and in the US, opening people’s hearts to new and exciting soundscapes. There is no language barrier. When Ramus Lyberth introduces his songs it is with charm and humour, and when he starts singing his body, soul and spirituality come together and draws the listener into a dreamy and different universe.
Asanaqigavit is his latest album for which he won two Danish Music Awards in 2007. The title means “With Love”, and those two words actually say it all. He sings because he loves singing – and he loves people and will share his gift with them. You can also put it like this, which Rasmus Lyberth did with his collection of poems in 2001:
Inuuneq asagulu – inuunerup asammatit Love life – life loves you
Rasmus Lyberth has been knighted “Ridder af Dannebrog” by the Danish Queen, Margaret the 2nd. He has also won the Danish PH Prize, the Danish Jazz, Beat and Folk prize, and the prestigious Nordic Council’s Medal of Honour, and has recently become an ambassador for Unicef.
