If you were to combine the music of Fela Kuti and John Coltrane, add some cubist rhythmic kaleidoscopy, south India talas and Balinese gamelan structures you would get something that sounds like FOLLOW FOLLOW.It was founded by Rainer Wiens in 2000 with the purpose of making people dance in a communal party of rhythmic intoxication. Originally playing strictly the music of afro beat founder Fela Kuti, FOLLOW FOLLOW now focuses on the music of composer/guitarist Rainer Wiens as well as Fela’s classics. The band consists of Jean Derome, father of musique actuelle in Quebec, winner of the Freddie Stone Award, and one of Canada’s most exciting saxophonists and composers. He is joined on the front line by Montreal sax virtuoso Frank Lozano - -the “toreador of the tenorâ€, Quebec’s most recorded saxophonist and also a highly respected teacher at McGill University.
The Labrador Groover, Cordell Henebury holds down the 2nd guitar chair when he’s not hosting the Montreal Jazz Festival jam sessions. He’s easily recognizable as the only white guy in Montreal reggae bands.
Drummer Thom Gossage has been performing on stage since he was 8 years old. He was Montreal’s first call drummer for funk in the 80’s and 90’s and now leads his award- winning jazz group “OTHER VOICESâ€.
Bassist Clinton Ryder has become one of Montreal’s most in- demand jazz bass players since relocating from British Columbia where he played regularly in many Nanaimo bars.Leader Rainer Wiens, whose published works are in the permanent collection of New York’s MUSEUM OF MODERN ART is primarily known for his work with SILK STOCKINGS, SOUND IMAGE THEATRE, and his prepared guitar solos and duos. He is the owner of 52 kalimbas and has been diagnosed with incurable rhythmic obsession. The band’s virtuosity, improvisational skill and love of the music are readily apparent to any audience and it is impossible not to have a great time.
