About Me

I'm never sure if I should write this in first person or third person. Maybe I should use "we" since this is a "band" bio, or I can claim to be royalty, or schizophrenic. (The three aren't mutually exclusive, so I could probably pretend to be a whole bunch of people.) Anyway, Ryan Torchia (I, or we...whatever) is a San Francisco Bay Area native who generally composes music for 4-channel or 8-channel playback. Most of the electronic works here are stereo reductions of the original multichannel pieces - (the originals in a dark concert hall on a good 8-speaker system are a lot more intense). I have a collection of these pieces available on iTunes. I also compose for traditional instruments, and use to play in an improvised experimental noise group called The Gas Chamber Orchestra (who also have a page on MySpace and a couple albums on iTunes). I studied composition at San Jose State University and SUNY at Buffalo. I don't compose enough right now, but I'll get back to it eventually.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Ryan H. Torchia
Influences: All over the map: minimalism, most sub-genres of rock, especially indie-rock, noise-rock, post-rock, math rock, arena rock, classic rock, rock 'n' roll, psychedelic rock, alt country, noise music and the avant-garde, experimental music, drone music, early new age, downtempo electronica, impressionism, romanticism, baroque, dadaism, fluxism...it's probably shorter to list what I don't like: filk, unadventurous sample-based top 40, most Classical-era classical music, Chinese opera, probably some more I'm forgetting...
Sounds Like: The electronic stuff is generally pretty dense and static. My written instrumental music sounds like Gershwin, Stravinsky, and Reich in a blender.
