I’d like to introduce you to a very special film festival that inspires and educates budding film enthusiasts on short films and film making to communities across Australia. It’s called In the Bin and the touring film workshop and festival is currently visiting over 70 rural, regional and suburban areas of Australia. In the Bin Short Film Festival began in February 2000 in Currumbin on the Gold Coast. Jed Cahills initial vision was to create an outdoor event to showcase award winning short films to Gold Coast residents. The 16 short films shown on the night are finalists chosen from 450-odd entrants from across Australia. They run anywhere between one minute and 15 minutes, appealing to a broad cross-section of society. The evening is an eclectic mix of comedy, lifestyle, drama and action, all to the backdrop of beautiful Currumbin beach. The response to the initial event was so overwhelming that we made it an annual event, attracting crowds in excess of 8,000 in 2006. With the festivals exponential growth, the decision was made to take the festival national and visit rural and regional destinations across Australia and in addition provide educational workshops for budding film enthusiasts. In the Bin is now regarded as Australia’s largest Touring Short Film Workshop. The touring festival is now entering its 7th year and is constantly growing. Focussed on building strong relationship with communities, In the Bin Touring Festival is aimed at being a cultural festival to suit all needs. The education program is aimed at teaching budding film makers and students the processes involved in creating their own short film. The participants are educated in the basics of filming, editing, packaging and marketing. The program is run over three days in each community, with the participants screening their films on the night of the festival along with the 16 In the Bin Short Films. The films are made under the banner “What makes your community unique?†This helps communities gain a strong feeling of togetherness and encourages community spirit
