Take The Quiz Now! Quizzes by myYearbook.comWhat Is Hip Hop?Hip Hop is an art form that includes deejaying [cuttin' & scartchin'] emceeing/rappin'. breakdancing and grafitti art. These art forms as we know them today originated in the South Bronx section of New York City around the mid 1970s. Hip Hop has thrived within the subculture of Black and Puerto Rican communities in New York and is now just recently beginning to enjoy widespread exposure. From a sociological perspective, Hip Hop has been one of the main contributing factors that helped curtail gang violence due to the fact that many adults found it preferrable to channel their anger and aggressions into these art forms which eventually became the ultimate expression of one's self.Break dancing, a colorful and acrobatic style of dance which includes headspins, backspins and 'Kirk Thompson-like flairs..[long before Olympic athlete Kirk Thompson invented it], traces its roots back to the African martial arts form known as capoeta. This form of fighting was employed by revolting slaves who were brought to Brazil. No one knows for sure who was New York's first break dancer, but a group of youngsters known 'B-Boys' and original members of an organization called Zulu Nation certainly made it popular. Around the same time break dancing begain hitting the streets of New York, within the Black communities of California a style of dance known as Pop-Locking which includes strutting, moonwalking, waving and angular robot-like contortions of the body also began to take form. Movies such as 'Beat Street' and 'Breaking' have help shed light on this new type of dance.Rapping as we know it today, saying rhymes to the beat of music was originally called emceeing. It draws its roots from the Jamaican art form known as toasting. Artist like James Brown, The Last Poets and Gil Scott Heron along with old 'dozens' rhymes and jail house jargon passed down through the years and made popular by Black activist H.Rap Brown have helped influence rap to its present form. Rap has surfaced and resurfaced under different names down through the years within Black communities of this country.Deejaying [cuttin' and scratchin'] is the manipulation of a record over a particular groove so it produces strange sounds. This was invented by either Grand Master Flash or Grand Wizard Theodore, two popular disc jockeys from the Bronx. Herbie Hancock with his song 'Rock It' and Malcolm MacLaren's Buffalo Gals' has helped make this art form popular outside the New York City area. Many of us have unanswered questions of the origin of hip-hop. Hip-hop has gone global from the roots of African-Americans. It is a form of music where you can express your thoughts and feelings through the emphatic way of rhyming. The derivation of this unique genre of music formerly started in the Bronx with a dj from a Jamaican by the name of Kool Herc in the 70’s. His rhymes were ab libed over records of the genre of music reggae. Back then, party-goers would use their inimitable ability to rhyme and recite popular phrases. It was common for the dj to acknowledge people at the party. After he would get done acknowledging these people, they would in turn shout their own names and slogans. As this continued on in frequent parties, they began to rhyme with what they were shouting out. Before you knew it, students in school would freestyle to one another with rhymes of their own. Most people would make use of their rhymes in parties. During that duration of time, rap wasn’t called ‘rap.’ It was rather called ‘emceeing.’ As Kool Herc advanced, he allowed two of his friends, Coke La Rock and Clark Kent to carry out the microphone duties. They were the first emcee team entitled as Kool Herc and the Herculoids. Many critics thought that Hip-Hop would fade away quickly, much like the Disco craze of the 1970's. Hip-Hop has only grown larger, and is now an undeniable cultural and musical force. Its roots are strictly urban, as people like Grandmaster Flash and Kurtis Blow mixed rhythmic poetry with a ghetto beat. Hip-Hop remained a mainly urban black taste, until a transformation began to occur in the late 1980s. Hip-Hop (or Rap) began to cross over in to pop culture, as some rappers found themselves chart toppers. Rap has definitely changed, for the better. The lyrics began to focus more on Hip-Hop culture, and the music has become much more sophisticated. Hip Hop its now a way of life and is the defining music of the 1990s. No other music form is riddled with the deep-rooted angst or the captivation of American youth culture. Hip-Hop needs to be accepted as the musical voice of the 1990s, as well as very enjoyable listening.Hip-hop is still going strong. It managed to survive the untimely deaths of rap kings such as Notorious B.I.G. and 2Pac and shifted to a new focus: Although artists such as Jay-Z and Snoop gained commercial success while maintaining their street creditability, hip-hop became a marketing product. Violence was on the rise, rappers got into trouble with the law some innocent (Puffy Daddy), some guilty. And some of the elite rappers left the game because things were not what they used to be. Artists such as Puffy, Missy Elliott and Busta Rhymes have entertained us with million-dollar videos. Rappers are becoming CEO's, starting clothing lines (Sean John), owning film companies, and stepping up to defend the culture. And with dominating artists such as Nelly, Eminem, Lil' Bow WOW, Lil' Romeo, Dre, Outkast and many more putting it down, hip-hop is here for the long run. It's not just music, it's a way of life.
