Relay Royalty

About Me

Our seventh annual benefit pageant will be held Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Covenant United Methodist Fellowship Hall, 3610 West Main Dothan, AL.
The pageant is open to ladies of all ages ~ birth through 99 years. It is a natural pageant, not a glitz pageant. Please see my "Note from the Director" below.
You do not have to reside in Houston County, but winners will be required to attend the Houston County Relay For Life.
Please email any additional questions you may have. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I have received a very legitimate question regarding the title of "Relay Hero".
You pay your registration fee to compete in the pageant. It is just like a normal pageant. You are scored for poise, etc. There is a winner, first and second for each division based solely on your walk.
Our highest honor/title bestowed is "Relay Hero". This award is not based on poise, dress, beauty or appearance in any way. It is strictly based upon collected donations for the American Cancer Society. The contestant who turns in the highest total wins the tallest trophy and the biggest crown. The donations could be raised however the young lady chooses. It could be through fundraisers (car washes, bake sales, etc.) Another option is just to ask everyone she knows (including friends and relatives who may live away)for a donation. Anyone who donates can make their checks payable to American Cancer Society and receive the usual tax deduction. You have until the day of the pageant to collect. For our very first pageant, the Relay Hero raised $129.00. However, we find the winning amount continues to increase as each year passes.
We are unable to advise a target amount by which to set your goal, because we have no way of knowing what monies will be turned in on the day of the pageant. One key is to get all your friends and family on your "team" and get them to collect from their friends/family.
I hope I have answered any question you may have about "Relay Hero". If not, you are more than welcome to email me.
Do you think you will compete for the title of "Relay Hero"? Please let me know.

"NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR"
The proverb says "Beauty without virtue is like a rose without scent." While beauty certainly has its value in our modern society, it is not what this pageant was built upon. This pageant and the Relay Royalty Team is about raising research dollars for the American Cancer Society. Holding this title tells you these particular young ladies are willing to work for a cause greater than a pretty trophy or a sparkling crown. We have stood in the freezing weather doing a penny drive at WalMart that raised over $500.00 (that's a lot of pennies!!) We have sweated and spread hay in stalls in preparation for a horse show that raised over $1100.00 for the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life is a walking event that raises money and awareness. Therefore, we walk in parades, with the exception of the Peanut Festival. We raise our own money to build our float for that.
We do have fun together. We have our socials and our celebrations. These make MEMORIES. The bond that makes us SISTERS is the shared hard work and satisfaction of a job well done for a cause in which we believe.
Quite simply, if you just want to smile and look pretty in your sash and crown, please do not compete. We would rather have a "plain Jane" who is not afraid to work than any glamour girl. We never lose sight of the cause!
One of my favorite people in history said it best.........
"Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much." Helen Keller
