About Me

About me?
Well to start off I was born on August 7, 1942 in Bahia, Brazil. I was the 5th child [soon to be of 7] of José Teles Veloso and Claudionor Viana Teles Veloso. My parents even let me name my little sister!
Fortunately for me, my family moved to Salvador when I was little and I then became immersed in music. I loved writing and film making at first, but then I discovered my life love, music. I basically spent my time writing poetry and music and learning the guitar, hoping one day to go to Rio De Janiero and join my idols in stardom.
Luckily enough my sister, Maria Bethânia got a part in a play in Rio when someone dropped out and I followed her there. I actually ended up winning a lyrics contest for my song "Um Dia" and was soon there after signed the Phillips label.
I also attended the Federal University of Bahia and there met my future friend and collaborator, Gilberto Gil. We would go on to invent the genre of tropicalismo, or tropicalia.
The only problem, that initially stood in my way was my political stance. You see I was very anti-government, the Hippie movement they called it, and my songs were continually censored on the radio and the really popular televised singing contests that Brazilians loved. Actually me and Gilberto were sent to jail for several months for anti-government activity in 1968 and we actually exiled ourselves to London in fear for our selves because of the turmoil in the country at the time.
I returned in 1972 and mostly made my music out of almost forgotten folk music and Afro-Brazilian culture. By 1980 I was pretty popular, even in countries outside of South America like Israel, Paris, and the United States. I toured all over the place and drew big crowds wherever I went, even being able to interview Mick Jagger in 1983!
In 1993 Gilberto and I released the album "Tropicalia 2" in honor of the genre we invented turning 25 years old. And in 1997 I released the book Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil and a CD "Livro" to go along with it. In 2004 I performed at the Academy Awards and released my first All-English CD, including a cover of a Nirvana song. Also, in 2006 I recorded another album, co-produced by my son Moreno. All in all in my music career I have won 5 Latin Grammy's, more than any other performer. I still can't over how I draw such huge crowd in the United States. I figured they wouldn't like my music, mainly because it is mostly in Portuguese, but they just love it. Crazy.
While that basically covers my life concerning my musical career and such I completely left out my romantic life. Well my first marriage was to the sister of my best friends ex-wife,Dedé in 1969. Complicated, huh? Anyways, together we had my first child, in 1972, a son we named Moreno. In 1982 I had an affair with a woman by the name of Paula Lavigne. This caused my marriage to Dedé to end in 1983 and I married Paula in 1986 when she was 17 years old. We had two sons, Zeca in 1992 and Tom in 1997. We ended up getting divorced in 2004..._____________________________________________________ ___..
