I've been performing & singin' songs for over ten years now... from 1995- 2000 with 'Closet Klezmer' and from 2000 - 2005 with 'The Horse's Leotard' - both bands were based in Canberra...
I'm currently performing with three acts - bio's are below...
KATE BURKE & RUTH HAZLETON
Kate & Ruth have spent the last nine years playing together at festivals around Australia and overseas, and their trademark interpretations of folk songs have won them great acclaim and popularity. Along the way they’ve collected awards, fans and a banjo, and have been described by The Australian as “Why folk music is cool againâ€. They are preparing for their third tour of the UK and have just released their fourth album, “Summer’s Lonesome Taleâ€.
Awards so far have included the ScreenSound Australia Award for Best Folk Album 2003 and the Canberra Critics Circle Award for best-selling album at the National Folk Festival in 2001, and last year they were nominated for Best Live Act by Folk Alliance Australia members. After their first ever festival appearance at the 1998 National Folk Festival, the duo received the Lis Johnston Award for Vocal Excellence.
Their albums have been enthusiastically received internationally, and the duo were named as one of the 10 best-selling artists for 2002 through Japans major folk music distributor, Tambourine Records. Kate & Ruth have recently been involved in Martyn Wyndham-Read’s Songlinks project, performing and recording alongside top folk artists from the UK and Australia, including Martin Carthy and the Copper Family. They have toured Ireland and recorded with legendary Irish singer Andy Irvine, and have performed with the likes of James Keelaghan and Kristina Olsen.
We have released our fourth album, "Summer's Lonesome Tale", and it is available through our website at www.kateandruth.com . Featuring guest musicians Andy Irvine, Bruce Molsky, Liz Frencham, Craig Woodward, Adrian Barker and Ben Stephenson.
"A ripper of a CD, full of good folk songs delightfully performed" - Graham McDonald, The Canberra Times
DEV'LISH MARY
DEVLISH MARY are Ruth Hazleton (Kate Burke & Ruth Hazleton, The Horses Leotard), Liz Frencham (Jigzag, Frencham/Smith), Sally Taylor (Flap!, Triskel), and Cat Moser (The Beenies, Conundrum). All members are old-time, bluegrass and western swing junkies from way back, and their interpretation of hillbilly and American roots music is red hot. Line up includes twin fiddles, bull-fiddle, guitar and clawhammer banjo.
Wah Hey... bring yer horse, saddle, dancin' shoes and a spare pair of socks... oh, and an apple in case you get hungry... and a tissue in case you get a runny nose...
BILL JACKSON & THE ACOUSTIC ORCHESTRA - I have also been recording and gigging with BILL JACKSON and dobro legend Pete Fidler - Bill released his second solo CD in March this year to much acclaim - 'Diggin' the Roots'. Have been enjoying playing with a bloke band, pluggin the ol' banjer in and feigning being a rock tart... oh what fun...
